KINSEY
The dust has barely settled on the highly divisive Presidential election and here comes a film subject that remains the ultimate divider - SEX!

3-1/2 stars (out of 4) [(2004)US-Germany/Fox Searchlight/Rated R] - (1 hr. 58 min)

Written & directed by Bill Condon

Lead Characters/Cast
Alfred Kinsey ('Prok') - Liam Neeson
Clara McMillen (Alfred's later wife) - Laura  Linney
Wardell Pomeroy - Chris O'Donnell
Clyde Martin - Peter  Sarsgaard
Paul Gebhard - Timothy Hutton
Alfred Seguine Kinsey (Alfred's  father) - John Lithgow

Review:

ATTENTION PARENTS: Get a babysitter, this is an 'adults only' experience!

While a certain amount of 'editing' was done to bring this film in line with MPAA
guidelines for an R-rating the latter half of the film does contain some strong subject matter including an interview with a pedophile that's sure to make younger audiences squirm.

That said, the film opens with Alfred Kinsey as a very conservative son raised by a 'fire-and-brimstone' ministerial father. Alfred's first act of rebellion is to defy his father's wish to become an engineer by studying insects and doing his graduate thesis on one little known species of wasp.

His determination as a scientist led him to collect a 'million' specimens before writing his final conclusions thus earning a doctorate from  Harvard. Sadly, this book based on years of research was one nobody ever read,  though it did merit a tenured position at Indiana University in Bloomington.

That's right folks, a midwestern college was about to yield up the most controversial study of human sexual behavior EVER conducted, not a university in New York, San Francisco ... or France for that matter. Kinsey's interest in the subject of sex didn't even occur until after he was married and learned that his 'manhood' was too large for his new bride's womanhood.

They were BOTH virgins and had no knowledge as to what was wrong until meeting with
a  doctor who performed a simple operation. However, when discussing sexual matters  with other couples it seemed there was still a lot doctors didn't know, so Dr.  Kinsey set about studying the subject the same way he did insects ... with  subjects, lots of subjects.

He traveled the country surveying men about their  sexual proclivities in a very candid manner using a specific one-on-one interviewing technique, processed the data, and produced the tome "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male" ... in 1948.

It's only as the second half of the film unfolds that the audience sees how these (now nearly 60 year old) findings initiated the controversy that still rages today. Not to mention that Kinsey's first non-insect book became an unqualified bestseller.

Of  course many point to this access to sexual knowledge on a mass scale as the birth of the 'sexual revolution', and now the sons and daughters of those original anti-'Kinsey' forces are preparing to boycott this film as their parents did his books.

No worries film fans, in Hollywood this is known as 'free  advertising', just look at what a little 'bad publicity' did for Michael Moore's  "Fahrenheit 9/11" (over $100 million and counting).

That said, this is an  ultimately enjoyable film because it does challenge the notion of
how much  knowledge we truly have about what our neighbors may be doing behind
closed  doors. Best of all, it accomplishes this task with Oscar-caliber input, from the  excellent writing and direction of Bill Condon ("Gods and Monsters") to the  remarkable ensemble cast featuring Oscar worthy performances by Liam Neeson ("Michael Collins") as 'Kinsey' and Laura Linney  ("P.S.") as the wife who showed him that love can't be quantified.

Who  knew that the real life of a data-obsessed scientific legend could be so fun to  watch, but if you do check it out, please leave the kids (and younger teens) at  home!

P.S. (Inside joke) Most ironic casting is having notorious wildman  Tim Curry ("Rocky Horror Picture Show") play the prudish anti-Kinsey,  sex-hygiene professor who resents Kinsey's interference in his subject area. His  first appearance in the film is sure to elicit
unwarranted giggles from 'Dr.  Frank-n-furter' fans!

Supporting Characters/Cast
Thurman Rice (Sexual Hygiene prof) - Tim Curry
Herman Wells (University president) - Oliver Platt
Alan Gregg (Rockefeller Foundation rep) - Dylan Baker
Alice Martin (Clyde's wife) - Julianne Nicholson
Kenneth Braun - William Sadler
Martha Pomeroy (Wardell's wife) - Heather Goldenhersh
Huntington Hartford - John McMartin
Sara Kinsey - Veronica Cartwright
Barbara Merkle - Kathleen
Chalfan Agnes Gebhard (Paul's wife) - Dagmara Dominczyk
Final Interview Subject...Lynn Redgrave

[Screened @ the Loews Lincoln Square IMAX theater (NYC)/07-18-05: 8:15pm]

BATMAN BEGINS
Stellar cast and gadgets galore (along with a huge IMAX presentation for me, your viewing may vary) make this a long  but still worthy addition to the 'Batman' franchise!

3-1/2 stars (out of 4 stars) [(2005)USA/WB] - (2 hr. 20 min.)

Co-written & directed by Christopher Nolan
Co-writer: David S. Goyer
Source: based upon Batman characters created by Bob Kane and published by DC Comics

Lead characters/Cast
Bruce Wayne/Batman - Christian Bale
Bruce Wayne (age 8)  - Gus Lewis
Alfred (butler, Wayne Mansion) - Michael Caine
Ducard (League of Shadows recruiter) - Liam Neeson
Rachel Dawes (asst. district atty.) - Katie  Holmes
Jim Gordon (Officer, then Lt.) - Gary Oldman
Dr. Jonathan Crane  (aka "Scarecrow') - Cillian Murphy
Carmine Falcone - Tom Wilkinson
Lucius  Fox - Morgan Freeman

Review(after two screenings - one in IMAX):

With four "Batman" movies already on DVD, one has to initially wonder what was director Christopher Nolan's ("Memento") reasoning for going back to the beginning.

Well, there is one good reason: 'Batman' has NO super powers, so exactly how does an ordinary guy learn to soar, fight bad guys en masse, and disappear like a bat out of hell???

For those that hate exposition this type of movie would seem to be the ultimate nightmare, but rest assured that after the first hour 'Batman' does 'begin', and he begins in earnest with a master plan to save all of Gotham from its greedy, corrupt self.

Long-overlooked leading man Christian Bale proves to have the perfect resume ("American Psycho," "Shaft") to  play 'Bruce Wayne/Batman', a hero with issues galore and billions of dollars at  his disposal to alleviate the tension.

Director Nolan also wisely supports Bale with a plethora of character actors on both sides of the 'Batman' camp. First off there's Oscar winning actors Michael Caine ("Hannah and her Sisters") and Morgan Freeman (''Million Dollar Baby") as Bruce Wayne's butler 'Alfred' and Wayne Enterprises main inventor 'Lucius Fox respectively.

On the villain side of the ledger there's Bruce's early mentor 'Ducard', played with vigor by Liam Neeson ("Gangs of New York"); the gangster 'Carmine Falcone', featuring the normally docile Tom Wilkinson ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"); and rising actor Cillian Murphy ("28 Days Later") as the nemesis 'Scarecrow' (he's a gas).

Biggest surprise of the film is seeing the normally intense Gary Oldman's ("Air Force One") turn as 'Officer Jim Gordon', the one 'good cop' in Gotham before he becomes Gotham's police chief later in the series.

For those wondering about the IMAX difference, this film only improves slightly on 'giant screen' mainly due to the fact that some of it's great Gotham setpieces are only shown briefly throughout the film.

Hopefully future sequels will show off some of the great work by the model designers including a giant monorail system that crisscrosses the city of Gotham.

What I enjoyed the most was seeing Bruce turn the various military prototypes being developed by Wayne Industries into what later will become Batman's normal tools of the trade.

Seeing 'the Tumbler' before it gets the 'Batmobile' treatment was sheer genius. Also, like "Spider-Man," the audience gets to see Bruce Wayne experience the bumps and bruises that learning to fly can entail.

The only real drawback to this movie is that it's 'too' slick for its own good. Considering the fact that it's showcasing a more realistic approach to the series they could have made a rougher looking movie instead of having even the homeless guys sporting trimmed beards.

Still worth watching on the big screen so hurry out to your local cineplex cause the DVD release is happening sooner than you think!

MOVIE TRIVIA from the all-knowing IMDb.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------
 The device, on the heel
of  his boot, that the Batman uses to summon a swarm of bats is taken directly
from  Frank Miller's "Batman: Year One".
--------------------------------------------------------------------
A second stage Scarecrow look was created for the hallucination scenes but was never shown on film. The mask was more organic and tighter around the actor's face.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Before Christian Bale was cast as 'Batman', many other actors were considered for the role including Ashton Kutcher and David Boreanaz.

Only days before the role of Batman was cast, eight actors were asked to audition for the part. The actors were Christian Bale, Joshua Jackson, Eion Bailey, Hugh Dancy, Billy Crudup, Cillian Murphy, Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal.

While Bale won the part, Christopher Nolan liked Murphy's audition so much, he cast him as Dr. Jonathan Crane/The Scarecrow.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Marilyn Manson was considered for the role of Dr. Jonathan Crane/The Scarecrow.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Wanting to use as many practical effects as possible, Christopher Nolan told the production crew that he wanted the Batmobile to actually do its own stunts without camera trickery, CGI or models, and as a result, the Batmobile built for  the movie could take sharp turns at 60 miles per hour, brake to a complete stop  on a moment's notice, and could even go into a ramp-less jump, clearing up to 40  feet in the air.

The Batmobile, 9 feet wide and 16 feet long, has a top speed of 106 miles per hour and can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6 seconds. The engine is a 5.7  liter V8 Chevy. It runs on unleaded gas and can do about 7 miles per gallon. It  has four 44-inch tires at the rear, made by Interco Tire Corp, while the front  is covered in jagged plates of armor. It was designed and built by Chris  Corbould and Andrew Smith at Shepperton Studios in England. This Batmobile was  built from the ground up and is estimated to be worth half a million pounds.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Before Christopher Nolan took over, director Darren Aronofsky was attached to make a Batman movie based on the graphic novel "Batman: Year One" and have the author Frank Miller write the screenplay.

By 2003 there was a first draft screenplay with story boards, which are properties of AOL Time Warner. Warner's decision for not producing the film is unknown, but based on the details that have since leaked out, it would probably have to do with the screenplay, which strayed a considerable amount from the source material, making Alfred an African-American mechanic named "Big Al," the Batmobile being a souped-up Lincoln Towncar, and Bruce Wayne being homeless, among other things.

This is all detailed in David Hughes' book "Tales from Development Hell."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Director Christopher Nolan decided that there would be no second unit, and so for the whole of the one hundred and twenty nine shooting days Nolan oversaw every shot of the film personally.

 KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
'Legolas' goes to Jerusalem and shows how a simple blacksmith can become General George S. Patton overnight (peasants sure know their artillery)!

2-1/2 stars (out of 4) [(2005)UK-Spain-US-Germany/FOX/Rated R] - (2 hrs. 25 min.)[NOTE: 4-disc Director's cut DVD is 3 hrs. 14 min.]

Directed by Ridley Scott
Screenplay by William Monahan

Lead characters/Cast
Balian - Orlando Bloom
Sibylla (wife to Guy de Lusignan) - Eva Green
Tiberias - Jeremy Irons
Guy de Lusignan - Marton Csokas

Supporting characters/Cast
Hospitaler - David Thewlis
Reynald - Brendan Gleeson
Priest - Michael Sheen
Godfrey - Liam Neeson
King Baldwin (masked leper) - Edward Norton

Review:

Before giving this film the thrashing it richly deserves I would like to state that the one highlight of the film was actor Marton Csokas portrayal of the French knight 'Guy de Lusignan', a character equally despicable and hilarious in his pretentiousness. Be sure to look out for Csokas' next film "Asylum" in select theaters, he's as good an actor in that film as he is a scene-stealer in this one.

Orlando Bloom is a good perfromer also, but this is the type of film that demands a superstar, or at least a young Peter O'Toole in the making. Sadly (as borne out by "Elizabethtown"), Bloom is still a supporting actor in terms of technique/star quality.

Edward Norton ducks any blame by wearing a mask for the whole movie?

Orlando needs a real leading man like Johnny Depp or a Viggo Mortensen to bring the best out in him on the big screen, but in this film he is the sole star. Left to carry too many scenes in this historical epic all by his lonesome proves a burden to heavy for him to shoulder.

Nice try-no cigar ex-'Legolas', as unfortunately, you bit off a bit more than you could chew with this one (who's your agent? Fire him/her). Maybe Brad Pitt could have pulled it off with newly created muscular body, but then again, how many of these horse-epics do we really need anyway? (re: "Troy")

Genre fans may tolerate the weak casting and certainly anyone who sympathizes
with the Muslim idea of a totally free Jerusalem should certainly agree with political ideas being doled out in heaping measures (Zionists should bypass this one completely).

Worth a DVD rental or a dollar/2nd run theater visit at best. Keep your expectations low for maximum enjoyment. It's certainly watchable for action fans with plenty of explosions courtesy of the supposedly primitive artillery.

Ah, c'est la guerre!

Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.

If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you.

"Based on what they know about the way these groups operate, our analyst says you have a  96 hour window from the time she was grabbed."
-Sam

The ticking clock. The key to a good thriller. With each passing second the deeper the protagonist must get in order to obtain the prize ... in this case, his prized teenaged daughter.

The second key to the thriller genre is a powerful leading man. What would the 007 series be without James Bond, or the Bourne trilogy without its title character. Lucky for everyone involved in this project they chose Irish-born actor Liam Neeson, whose six feet four inch frame fills the screen  while being compounded by the fearsome intensity of his performance.

If  you like movies that "kick-arse," catch this one on the big screen and  watch Neeson deliver the big hurt to some people  that sincerely deserve every punch. This may not top Oscar's list at the end of the year but for genre fans it totally delivers!
