Lorber Films is proud to announce the DVD release of
Peter Liechti's documentary
The Sound of Insects (2010)
On July 19, 2011!
New York, NY - July 5, 2011 - Lorber Films is proud to announce the DVD release of Peter Liechti's The Sound of Insects (2010), a powerful account of a man, alone in the wilderness, recording his thoughts in a diary while undergoing debilitating mental and physical deterioration as he commits suicide by starvation.
This film was an Official Selection at Hot Docs (2009), winner of the European Documentary Film Award Prix Arte (2009), winner of the Zürich FILM award (2009), and was an Official Selection at the Silverdocs Film Festival (2009). The film arrives on DVD, priced at $29.95, with a street date of July 19, 2011.
In a remote wintry forest, a hunter discovers the mummified corpse of a 40-year-old man. A diary is found near the body, detailing the man's everyday thoughts as he commits suicide through self-imposed starvation.
Based on an incredible true story, and adapted from the novella Miira Ni Naru Made (Until I Am a Mummy) by Shimada Masahiko, Peter Liechti's The Sound of Insects is a stunning investigation into the mystery of the man's enigmatic self-destructive motivations.
Taking on his point-of-view, the film presents the notebook entries as stream-of-consciousness musings on the world around him as his body dissipates, an attempt to piece together the causes of his disillusionment.
With luminous cinematography of the vaulting trees that surround his tented tomb, and of hallucinated memories of the cities and people he left behind, The Sound of Insects is a hypnotic and transcendent meditation on how the renunciation of life paradoxically reveals its beauty.

LORBER FILMS RELEASES
GENIUS WITHIN: THE INNER LIFE OF GLENN GOULD
ON DVD AND BLU-RAY ON MARCH 1, 2011
New York, NY - January 28, 2010 - Lorber Films, a division of Kino Lorber Inc., is proud to release GENIUS WITHIN: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould (2009), on DVD and Blu-ray. Directed by distinguished filmmakers Michèle Hozer and Peter Raymont (Shake Hands with the Devil), this film had a successful national theatrical run in over 80 US markets, and was hailed by critics.
As special features, the film's Blu-ray and DVD editions come with additional interview footage (cut from the film) with Cornelia Foss, Petula Clark and others who were close to the legend.
GENIUS WITHIN: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould is set to become available to the general public on March 1, 2011. The DVD is priced at $29.985, while the film's Blu-ray edition comes at $34.95.
Almost three decades after his death, legendary pianist Glenn Gould continues to captivate audiences worldwide. From his landmark interpretation of the Goldberg Variations to his innovations in recording technology (including early experiments in over-dubbing), Gould is one of the true geniuses of the 20th century. With GENIUS WITHIN, filmmakers Michèle Hozer and Peter Raymont trace Gould's evolution from his childhood in Toronto to his international triumphs, looking beyond his eccentric public image to the man hiding beneath the icon.
Weaving together an unprecedented array of never-before-seen concert footage, photographs, private home recordings and diary entries, Gould's brilliant musings on music, art and love are revealed for the first time. Paired with intimate interviews with his lovers, fellow musicians, and friends, including Cornelia Foss, Roxolana Roslak, Petula Clark and Vladimir Ashkenazy, GENIUS WITHIN draws a kaleidoscopic portrait of one of the towering figures in the history of classical music.
"GENIUS WITHIN gifts us with an invigorating and brightly unsettling journey into the complex psyche of Glenn Gould. Through the miracle of vintage film we are lured into the dense forest of his imagination - mischievous and divine. Gould exhibits his unparallel skills, shuffles in his ever-present overcoat, and is so alive that we sense his footsteps, and feel his breath as we are assaulted by the duality of his smile."- Patti Smith, Singer/Songwriter

Report from On Demand Weekly
On Demand Weekly's Cynthia Kane is back with her Top 13 Documentaries of 2010. Tell us what you think of the their lists or what your #1 movie of 2010 is HERE.
Cynthia Kane's Top 13 Documentaries of 2010 (in alphabetical order):
12th AND DELAWARE
Oscar-nominated directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady give us a powerful story about a corner in Fort Pierce, Florida where a women’s health clinic where they provide abortions stands on one side of the street and where opposite a ‘Right to Life” clinic has opened as a well-planned tactic of the war on women’s reproductive rights.
CLIENT NINE
Elliott Spitzer was once called Sherriff of Wall Street; then he became Governor of New York; then he made a really stupid mistake. Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney offers us a nop-notch, high-speed look at how it all happened, including that pov from Spitzer himself.
DISCO AND ATOMIC WAR
Brilliant and funny look at growing up in the Soviet Union, more specifically in Estonia with the strangest kind of information war, where a totalitarian regime stands face to face with the heroes of popular Western culture. And loses. Finnish television was a window to a world of dreams that the authorities could not block in any way. Though Finnish channels were banned, many households found some way to access the forbidden fruit.
A FILM UNIFINISHED
At the end of WWII, 60 minutes of raw film, having sat undisturbed in an East German archive, was discovered. Shot by the Nazis in Warsaw in May 1942, and labeled simply "Das Ghetto," this footage quickly became a resource for historians seeking an authentic record of the Warsaw Ghetto. However, the later discovery of a long-missing reel, inclusive of multiple takes and cameraman staging scenes, complicated earlier readings of the footage, a documentation of some of the worst horrors of our time and exposing the efforts of its perpetrators to propel their agenda and cast it in a favorable light.
INSIDE JOB
Oscar-nominated filmmaker, Charles Ferguson, exposes the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008. The global financial meltdown, at a cost of over $20 trillion, resulted in millions of people losing their homes and jobs . Through extensive research and interviews with major financial insiders, politicians and journalists, Ferguson traces the rise of a rogue industry and unveils the corrosive relationships which have corrupted politics, regulation and academia.
INTO ETERNITY
Every day, the world over, large amounts of high-level radioactive waste cre- ated by nuclear power plants is placed in interim storage, which is vulnerable to natural disasters, man-made disasters, and to societal changes. In Finland the world’s first permanent repository is being hewn out of solid rock – a huge system of underground tunnels - that must last 100,000 years as this is how long the waste remains hazardous.
LAST TRAIN HOME
Every spring, China’s cities are plunged into chaos, as all at once, a tidal wave of humanity attempts to return home by train. It is the Chinese New Year. The wave is made up of millions of migrant factory workers. The homes they seek are the rural villages and families they left behind to seek work in the booming coastal cities. It is an epic spectacle that tells us much about China, a country discarding traditional ways as it hurtles towards modernity and global economic dominance.
RESTREPO
Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington's year dug in with the Second Platoon in one of Afghanistan's most strategically crucial regions, the Korengal Valley eveals extraordinary insight into the surreal combination of back breaking labor, deadly firefights, and camaraderie as the soldiers painfully push back the Taliban.
THAY (THE TEACHER)
A little-seen documentary that aired on the newish doc series, Global Voices on the PBS World Channel. For the past 15 years, Nguyen Van Hung, once a homeless drug addict, has dedicated his life to helping street children survive AIDS in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This is the story of his fight against an epidemic that claims its victims by the millions, and of the innocent children and teenagers trapped in a global nightmare. A real find.
THE TILLMAN STORY
Pat Tillman gave up his professional football career to join the Army Rangers in 2002 and became an instant symbol of patriotic fervor and unflinching duty. But the truth about Pat Tillman is far more complex, and ultimately far more heroic, than the caricature created by the media. And when the government tried to turn his death into war propaganda, they took on the wrong family. From her home in the Santa Cruz mountains, Pat’s mother, Dannie Tillman, led the family’s crusade to reveal the truth beneath the mythology of their son’s life and death.
SERGIO
Charismatic, charming and complex, Sergio Vieira de Mello was the U.N.'s "go-to" guy. He could descend into the most dangerous places, charm the worst war criminals and somehow protect the lives of the ordinary people to whom he devoted his life. Filmmaker and former war correspondant Greg Baxter brings us the story of Vieira de Mello's most treacherous mission, to Iraq in 2003, when his own life hung in the balance.
STEAM OF LIFE
Not just naked Finnish men talking in the sauna, but this beautiful documentary reveals the men's naked souls in an exceptionally intimate and poetic way.
WASTE LAND
The transformative power of art and the beauty of the human spirit. Contemporary Brazilian-born artist Vik Muniz takes us on an emotional journey from Jardim Gramacho, the world's largest landfill on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, to the heights of international art stardom. Vik collaborates with the brilliant catadores, pickers of recyclable materials, true Shakespearean characters who live and work in the garbage quoting Machiavelli and showing us how to recycle ourselves.

LORBER FILMS OPENS THE COMEDY DOC
THE RED CHAPEL (2010)
ON DEC 29, 2010, AT NEW YORK'S IFC CENTER!
New York, NY - November 18, 2010 - Lorber Films is proud to announce the theatrical release of the comedy doc The Red Chapel (2010), winner of the World Cinema Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival.
This hilarious North-Korean exposé will be screened to New York critics on Tuesday, December 7, at 6pm (see below for details), before opening on December 29, 2010, at New York's IFC Center.
Directed by journalist-turned-filmmaker Mads Brügger, The Red Chapel focuses on a trio of Danish artists - director Mads Brügger, straight man Simon and self-proclaimed "spastic" Jacob - and their trip to North Korea under the guise of cultural exchange. Pretending to be a small Danish theatre group called The Red Chapel, they present themselves as regime sympathizers and mount an absurd variety show in Pyongyang.
Constantly shadowed by a guide, they rehearse under the watchful eye of government officials brought in to "collaborate" on their performance and make it more palatable for the Korean regime. But as the hoax plays out, the two comedians (both of North Korean descent) begin to emotionally unravel.
After directing and starring in the 2004 TV series "Danes for Bush," Brügger elevates journalistic prank exploration into an art form. With his theater troupe's hilarious eagerness to cross cultural lines, The Red Chapel exposes more than North-Korea's reality bending machinery. It also reveals that the very framework of cultural exchange is embedded in a struggle for dominance and containment.
The Red Chapel was an official selection at this year's New Director's/New Films and South by Southwest film festivals.

WINNEBAGO MAN (2010)
Directed by Ben Steinbauer
Type "The Angriest Man in the World" into any search engine, and one name appears -- Jack Rebney, a.k.a. "The Winnebago Man" -- an '80s RV salesman, whose hilarious, profanity-strewn, on-the-job meltdown was captured on video and passed around on VHS tapes, before exploding into an Internet phenomenon seen by millions.
When a young filmmaker sets out on the seemingly impossible task of tracking down Rebney, who disappeared 20 years before, he finds Rebney living alone on a mountain top, as sharp-tongued as ever, but more intelligent and lovable than anyone could have imagined.
WINNEBAGO MAN is an outrageously funny look at viral culture and an unexpectedly redemptive tale of one man's response to unwanted celebrity.
ABOUT THE ORIGINAL 1988 VIRAL VIDEO - THAT INSPIRED THE DOCUMENTARY
Following a two-week video shoot in August 1988, a 4-minute outtakes reel mysteriously surfaced, and came to be known as the "Winnebago Man." While the completed sales video was sent to Winnebago dealers to promote their 1989 Itasca Sunflyer motorhome, copies of outtakes began circulating amongst the crew and their friends on VHS tape and eventually spread amongst tape traders to become an underground phenomenon.
In 2005, when the online video revolution took off, Jack Rebney became one of the first internet folk heroes. Today, the "Winnebago Man" clip has been seen by more than 20 million people, and has attracted a cult following in Hollywood.
The "Winnebago Man" has been quoted in movies and on TV by everyone from Ben Affleck to Alec Baldwin to SpongeBob SquarePants, and earlier this year, Conan O'Brien named "Winnebago Man" as one of his all-time favorite videos on YouTube. There's even a painting of Jack Rebney - as Shrek - that hangs in offices of Dreamworks Animation.

JACK REBNEY TODAY
After traveling to New York, LA and San Francisco for the theatrical openings of WINNEBAGO MAN, the 80-year-old Rebney has returned to his mountaintop cabin, where he continues to live alone with his beloved pit bull, "Buddha." He would like audiences to know that he's very pleased with how the film turned out.
"It's not War and Peace. It's not Doctor Zhivago," Rebney says, "But, it says something, that after seeing it, people come up to me and throw their arms around me and they're still laughing. People come up to me with tears in their eyes. It's not surprising, then, that I like the film. And I haven't liked anything in about 20 years."
Rebney and the film's director, Ben Steinbauer, have become good friends and they speak on the phone almost every day.

MY ENEMY’S ENEMY
An acclaimed documentary from Kevin Macdonald, the Oscar®-winning director of LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, FOUR DAYS IN SEPTEMBER and TOUCHING THE VOID. MY ENEMY’S ENEMY.
His latest documentary was shown at both Telluride and Toronto, blends striking debate, wit and visual panache to tell the extraordinary story of Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie a.k.a. the Butcher of Lyon.
After WW2, Barbie became an agent of American counter-intelligence during the Cold War and later became astonishingly successful in reviving the fortunes of other ex-Nazis. Macdonald reveals Barbie’s life story as something wilder and more bizarre than what most fiction writers could dream up, and he gives the film the texture and suspense of thrillers like THE ODESSA FILE, THE MARATHON MAN and THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL.

DVD release announcement: Virginia Williams' documentary film FRONTRUNNER is On DVD now!
Press release
IndiePix is proud to announce the highly anticipated release of Virginia Williams' documentary film FRONTRUNNER on DVD January 12th!
The setting: Afghanistan's first democratic election ever. In the aftermath of 9/11, America's military might has set the stage. But who will determine the fate of democracy in Afghanistan?
"Vote for the mother!" Dr. Massouda Jalal shouts to the crowd.
FRONTRUNNER tells the heroic story of this medical doctor and mother of three. As a children's advocate, she defied the murderous Taliban regime. Now, she boldly runs for president -- the only woman in a field of 17 candidates. In a dramatic turn of events, she holds the fate of the country's first presidential election in her own hands.
Amidst death threats and bomb attacks, Jalal doggedly campaigns from the back of a taxi, in mosques, in homes, in busy markets and in the streets. Her courage shows that it's the dangerous work done by ordinary Afghans -- women and men -- that will determine the fate of a newly born democracy.
