Press release - Advance DVD announcement
Kino Lorber Announces the Blu-ray Release of
Boccaccio '70 (1962) and Casanova '70 (1965)
On Oct. 11, 2011!
New York, NY - September 20, 2011 - Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray release of two classics of Italian cinema: Boccaccio '70 (1962), a landmark anthology film directed by four master filmmakers (Fellini, Monicelli, Visconti and De Sica); and Casanova '70 (1965), a raucously wild and funny sex comedy starring Marcello Mastroianni and directed by Mario Monicelli.
Both films are available individually on Blu-ray, each packaged with special features including trailers and stills galleries. The street date for each is October 11th. Boccaccio '70 is priced at $34.95, and Casanova '70 is priced at $29.95.
Boccaccio '70 (1962)
Four legendary Italian filmmakers direct some of Europe's biggest stars in Boccaccio '70 (1962), a landmark anthology film.Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street), Federico Fellini (8 1/2), Luchino Visconti (The Leopard) and Vittorio
De Sica (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) direct Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg, Romy Schneider and more through four stories of unashamed eros.
Modeled on Boccaccio's Decameron, they are comic moral tales about the hypocrisies surrounding sex in 1960s Italy.
Monicelli's "Renzo e Luciana" (cut out of the original American release) is a frothy tale of young love and office politics in the big city. Fellini's notorious "Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio" features Ekberg as a busty model in a milk advertisement whose image begins to haunt an aging prude. Visconti's "Il Lavoro" stars Romy Schneider as a trophy wife enduring her husband's very public affairs, and De Sica's "La Riffa" raffles off a night with Sophia Loren to a lucky ticket-holder during a small town fair.
Bursting with passion and sly satire, Boccaccio '70 is a glittering showcase for some of the greatest talents in movie history.

Casanova '70 (1965)
Academy Award® Nominee Best
Original Screenplay - 1965
WINNER
1965 San Sebastian International Film Festival
- Best Actor Marcello Mastroianni
- Best Director Mario Monicelli
Nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Screenplay, Casanova '70 is a raucously funny sex romp starring Marcello Mastroianni at his charismatic peak.
Directed by Italian comedy legend Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street), it finds army officer Andrea (Mastroianni) dealing with a particularly strange case of impotence: his libido only gets aroused in the middle of near-death experiences. So while candle-lit dinners leave him cold, a female lion tamer or a General's wife expand his lust to dangerous proportions.
After a visit to a psychoanalyst, he fears his vice will lead to an early grave, so he attempts to live as a celibate with the virginal beauty Gigliola (Virna Lisi), but he is only delaying his inevitable descent back into sin.
Packed with bed-hopping hijinks, a parade of gorgeous actresses, and Mastroianni's hilariously dry wit, Casanova '70 is a colorfully ribald gem from the Golden Age of Italian comedy.
Bonus Features:
Theatrical Trailer * Stills Gallery
1920 x 1080p * 115 minutes * Italian w/ English subtitles

Press release - DVD BOX SET
Eclipse Series 27: Raffaello Matarazzo’s Runaway Melodramas
Violence rocks a happy family after a working-class wife is wooed by a dangerous former flame. A woman escapes the clutches of her dominating stepmother with her lover, only to find her life spinning crazily out of control in newly harrowing ways. A wealthy matriarch tears her son from the peasant girl he adores, initiating a multigenerational tragedy.
These are some of the tantalizing scenarios that kick off the sensational films in this month’s new Eclipse collection, Raffaello Matarazzo’s Runaway Melodramas, and they just scratch the surface of the luxuriant loopiness that drives these narratives.
Virtually unknown in the U.S., Matarazzo’s weepies—pure doses of soap operatic grandeur in the Douglas Sirk vein—were megahits in Italy in the 1950s. The four titles brought together here, never before available in this country, are deliriously unrestrained tales of couples in crisis and families in fragments, marked by wonderfully improbable twists and turns.
FOUR-DVD BOX SET INCLUDES:
CHAINS
After years of making mostly comedies and literary adaptations, Matarazzo turned to melodrama with this intense tale of a tight-knit family shattered by temptation.
TORMENTO
Anna flees her home, where she has been victimized for years by her spineless father’s mean-spirited second wife, to be with her lover, an honest businessman yet to make his fortune. When he is accused of a murder he didn’t commit, the couple’s domestic tranquillity is upended.
NOBODY’S CHILDREN
Nobody’s Children is the first half of an overflowing diptych of melodramas chronicling the labyrinthine misfortunes of a couple, Guido and Luisa (Amedeo Nazzari and Yvonne Sanson), torn cruelly apart by fate—and meddling villains.
THE WHITE ANGEL
In The White Angel, the sequel to the blockbuster Nobody’s Children, the perpetually put-upon Guido and Luisa return for a new round of trials and tribulations.
Available now! SRP: $59.95 or Criterion Store price: $47.96

THE DOUBLE HOUR
Starring: Ksenia Rappoport and Filippo Timi
Directed by Giuseppe Capotondi
NOW PLAYING in 2 NYC venues: the Landmark-Sunshine & Lincoln Plaza Cinemas
Sonia and Guido might be the two loneliest people in the Italian city of Turin. A penniless maid and a chilly
ex-cop, they each go about their daily routines like ghosts, both tormented by mistakes and loss from
their individual pasts, unable to truly move forward with their lives in any meaningful way.
But, when the two meet for the first time in the grimmest of settings -- a schmaltzy speed dating event -- wary flirtation
blooms into desperate passion. Only a single, shocking incident, an ill-timed robbery, threatens to destroy
the salvation that Sonia and Guido so quickly find in each other.
THE DOUBLE HOUR is, at once, a stark romance, a touching, psychological thriller, and a story about
possibilities. La doppia ora: A second chance, a magical moment when a person makes a wish, hoping
against hope for a better life, for love, for redemption.
But, is wishing, as Guido suggests, only a game?
Giuseppe Capotondi’s THE DOUBLE HOUR premiered at the 66th Venice International Film Festival where
Ksenia Rappoport’s performance as “Sonia” earned her the Volpi Cup Award for Best Actress and Filippo
Timi won the Pasinetti Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of “Guido.” The film also received Venice’s
Young Cinema Award for Best Film. THE DOUBLE HOUR, which also screened at the Toronto International
Film Festival, is Capotondi’s first feature-length motion picture.
RATING: NR
RUNNING TIME: 96 Minutes
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
“THE DOUBLE HOUR is a love story, basically. It’s about the second chance or one’s capacity for grabbing
that chance when it comes. It’s also about forgiveness and the capacity for forgiving yourself.
But, it’s all in the shape of a mystery or a film noir. Visually, the film is very Italian. I was influenced by the Italian film noir, or giallo, of the 70’s and 80’s, like the work of Dario Argento and Mario Bava.
But it also incorporates influences from Japanese horror. I was very interested in putting that on film: keeping in mind the Italian tradition but also looking for other inspiration. I’ve always been interested in the dark side of the human brain.
THE DOUBLE HOUR is for people who love cinema, hopefully, and who go to the cinema not just to escape for two hours. You have to use your brain.” - Giuseppe Capotondi, director

THE SICILIAN GIRL
Has U.S. Theatrical Premiere Wednesday, August 4 at Film Forum
A Searing Drama Based on True Events
A Teenage Girl Breaks the Mafia’s Code of Silence
Film Forum is pleased to present the U.S. theatrical premiere of Marco Amenta’s THE SICILIAN GIRL, beginning Wednesday, August 4.The film is based on the true story of Rita Atria, a 17-year-old Sicilian whose father and brother were both Mafia members (and victims), who breaks the vow of silence – omerta – that enshrouds her world. In 1991, during a period when the Mafia was under increasing pressure from the Italian judicial system, Rita gives evidence to famed anti-Mafia judge Paolo Borsellino.
Drawing upon the young woman’s extensive diaries, Marco Amenta tells her story, beginning in Sicily in 1985 when, as a small child, she experienced her beloved father as a respected member of the community – a man to whom neighbors would turn for help when a rapacious landlord orders their eviction. Soon after, he’s shot dead in the sun-drenched village square as his daughter looks on.
Six years later, her brother is murdered. In court, Rita’s words are denounced as “the ravings of a fanatical adolescent bent on revenge.” But are they? Amenta underlines the extraordinary courage of his protagonist by including a documentary glimpse of the real-life Rita during the film’s final moments.

THE MAN WHO WILL COME gets preem in NYC festival!
OPEN ROADS – NEW ITALIAN CINEMA (2010)
THE MAN WHO WILL COME (North American Premiere)
[L’UOMO CHE VERRÀ - Dir. by Giorgio Diritti / Italy, 2009, 35mm, 117']
New York, May 26, 2010 – With L’UOMO CHE VERRÀ, award-winning director Giorgio Diritti takes up a particularly gruesome episode from the fight of the Italian resistance against the Nazi occupation towards the end of World War II.
Winter, 1943. Martina is 8 years old and lives on the slopes of Monte Sole, not far from Bologna. She is the only child of a peasant family who, like many, are struggling to get by. Years previously she lost her newborn brother and hasn’t spoken since.
In December her mother becomes pregnant again.Months go by and the child grows in its mother’s womb. Martina anxiously awaits her brother’s arrival as the war gets closer and closer and life becomes more and more difficult. On the night of the 28th of September 1944, the baby is finally born.
Almost simultaneously the SS unleash an unprecedented reprisal in the area. More than 770 mostly elderly, women, and children were executed in cold blood in what became known as “The Marzabotto Massacre”.
In L’uomo che verrà, Diritti shows war as seen from below, from the perspective of those who suffer, the simple folk who unwittingly find themselves caught up in the great historical events that seem to forget the lives of common people. It hews close to documented events, with the Bolognese dialect adding a layer of authenticity.
A stellar cast with Maya Sansa and Alba Rohrwacher, two of the leading Italian actresses of today, as well as an impassioned performance by Claudio Casadio round out an ensemble cast that makes us relive ordinary lives in extraordinary times. Another stand-out is Greta Zuccheri Montanari’s heartbreaking turn as Martina.
