Cinema LATINO In the past decade there has been a large influx of Spanish-speaking people into the United States. Up until recently, neither the TV networks nor the Hollywood execs felt this was an audience worth tapping.
That has since changed.
With the ascension of UGLY BETTY to TV's top 10, the major studios have decided to draw the normally DVD/Telemundo-driven Spanish audiences into USA theaters with films in English and/or Spanish in much the same way that Bollywood has been co-producing films with their American counterparts to serve their burgeoning Hindi moviegoers here in the states.
This thread will seek to promote these latest offerings in order to provide a forum for both information-seekers and those wishing to offer critical reaction.
Will Cinema Latino yield a universally-themed Oscar challenger or will it stick to crowd-pleasing entertainment for their core audience?
We'll see ... (my apologies for not being able to offer a Spanish version of the above, try clicking the subtitling function on your computer .... just kidding ... Ola senors & senoritas).

OCTUBRE
OPENS MAY 6, 2011 @ THE ANGELIKA-Manhattan in NEW YORK CITY
Winner of the Cannes Grand Jury Prize, OCTUBRE is a wry and charming film from Peruvian filmmaking duo Daniel and Diego Vega.
October is the "purple month" in Lima, when the grey city’s somber tones give way to processions celebrating the Lord of Miracles. Hope is reborn among the throngs of devotees who light candles and follow the processions, each in search of their own miracle.
Tucked away in one of the Lima's modest flats lives Clemente, a loan shark with a penchant for reckless hookers, grave solitude, money lending and nothing else. Stuck in a shallow routine, Clemente lacks any real emotional connection to anyone. People, in turn, refer to him not by name, but as “the pawnbroker’s son.”
Returning home one day to an apparent break-in, Clemente finds that the intruder has left a newborn baby, the product of one of his frequent liaisons with prostitutes. When Clemente finds himself ill-equipped for his new role, Sofia, one of his clients and an Octubre worshipper, intervenes to help him take care of the baby while he goes in search of its mother.
And, as seems fitting during the month of miracles, with its air of hope for better things, a once unpleasant, cold and lonely man finds that his life is about to change.
A deadpan dark comedy incorporating influences ranging from Jim Jarmusch and Aki Kaurismaki to Robert Bresson, OCTUBRE is a distinctively humorous film not to be missed.
Peru, 2010 83 min., Unrated, In Spanish, Color Cinemascope, Dolby SR

A VITAGRAPH FILMS Release of a Morena Films Production
EVEN THE RAIN
Opening February 18, 2011
New York: Angelika Film Center, City Cinemas 1,2,3
Los Angeles: The Landmark, Laemmle Pasadena Playhouse 7, Laemmle Encino Town & Country
A Spanish film crew helmed by idealistic director Sebastian (Gael García Bernal) and his cynical producer Costa (Luis Tosar) come to Bolivia to make a revisionist epic about the conquest of Latin America - on the cheap. Carlos Aduviri is dynamic as “Daniel,” a local cast as a 16th century native in the film within a film. When the make-up and loin cloth come off, Daniel sails into action protesting his community’s deprivation of water at the hands of multi-national corporations
When riots break out in Cochabamba, protesting excessive fees for water, production is interrupted and the convictions of the crew members are challenged. Sebastian and Costa are forced to make an unexpected emotional journey in opposite directions.
With ample irony, EVEN THE RAIN (También la Lluvia) explores the effects of Spanish imperialism, still resonating some 500 years later in the continued struggle against oppression by indigenous people.
This fictional Fitzcarraldo-like quest to make a film against all odds, is set against the back drop of the real life “Water Wars,” fought against the privatization of Bolivia’s water supply in the year 2000 and is anchored in the philosophies of historian Howard Zinn, as well as the stories of 16th century priests, Fathers Bartolome de las Casas and Antonio Montesinos, the first radical voices of conscience against an Empire.
From the distributors of THE BAADER MEINHOF COMPLEX. Directed by Iciar Bollain (Take My Eyes) and written by long-time Ken Loach collaborator Paul Laverty (The Wind That Shakes the Barley).

KINO RELEASES ON DVD (NOV. 30, 2010) THE HIGHLY-ACCLAIMED DRAMA
LIVERPOOL (2008)
FROM ARGENTINE AUTEUR LISANDRO ALONSO
New York, NY - October 18, 2010 - Kino International is proud to release Liverpool (2008) on DVD, Lisandro Alonso' s internationally acclaimed Argentinean feature about an itinerant sailor traveling home to his estranged mother in Tierra del Fuego. Using non-professional actors he met in the area, it is a strikingly authentic look at life on the margins of society.
The film premiered at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and traveled around the world (it was selected to the Toronto, Rio De Janeiro, Hong Kong, and Rotterdam festivals, among numerous others). Liverpool was also featured in a full retrospective of Alonso's films at the Museum of Modern Art in 2010, and the USA DVD will will become available to the general public on November 30, 2010.
Farrel (Juan Fernández) is an enigmatic seaman who takes shore leave from a massive, lonely cargo ship in order to make the arduous journey to a remote sawmill on the southern tip of South America. With his sole company a bottle of vodka, he hitchhikes in sullen silence, trudging past stunning snow swept landscapes (beautifully shot by Lucio Bonelli), as unspoken tragedies rattle around in his skull. When he finally reaches his mother, he discovers he has been forgotten, a ghost to his family and his hometown.
The lead actor, Fernández, was working in a snow plow when Alonso met him during his travels. Alonso has cast non-professionals since his debut feature, La Libertad (2001, named one of the ten best films of the decade by Cinema Scope magazine), choosing to work on the thin boundary between documentary and fiction.
He is attracted to locations first, sketching out a brief outline of a story once he gets there, and then finds locals to enact the tale. His films are documents of the varying landscapes of Argentina as much as evocative stories about the hardscrabble life of solitary working-class men. He has said, "For me, making films is an excuse to see different places and people."
For Liverpool, his fourth film (the others are Los Muertos (2004) and Fantasma (2006)), he became entranced with a magazine story about Tierra del Fuego, and then traveled multiple times through the province, even living on the freighter that would later carry Farrel down the coast, from Buenos Aires to Tierra del Fuego.
Alonso made the five-day journey twice, living on the lowest deck. So every bead of sweat or trudge through the snow that Fernández experienced, Alonso also experienced, lending every carefully composed shot the ring of truth.

MAYA ENTERTAINMENT ACQUIRES
MEXICO’S BOX OFFICE HIT
“CASI DIVAS”
FOR U.S. THEATRICAL AND HOME ENTERTAINMENT DISTRIBUTION
Film Opens Theatrically on August 21, 2009
Los Angeles (June 24, 2009) – Maya Entertainment acquired U.S. theatrical and home entertainment rights to the Spanish-language comedy from Mexico, “Casi Divas.”
The film is written and directed by Issa Lopez (“Ladies’ Night”, “Efectos Secundarios,” "Ninas Mal”) and scored by Academy Award®-winning composer Hans Zimmer.
In Mexico, "Casi Divas,” produced by Columbia Pictures Producciones México, the local production arm of Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE), opened number one at the box office and was among the top 5 grossing films of 2008.
Maya Entertainment will release the film theatrically in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and San Diego on August 21, 2009 with a national rollout to follow.
“Maya is excited to distribute Sony’s hugely entertaining film about the hopes and aspirations of women everywhere. This commercial and heartwarming film supports our mission to distribute great stories about the Latino experience,” said Tonantzin Esparza, Maya Entertainment’s Director of Acquisitions.
Deborah Schindler, President of International Motion Picture Production for Sony, stated: "’Casi Divas’ is the second hit feature from Columbia Pictures Produccions Mexico. It's a testament to the genius of writer/director Issa Lopez that the film speaks a universal language and has found distribution outside Mexico in the U.S. market. Our very own Ignacio Darnaude, Sony’s International EVP of Creative Advertising, came up with the original idea and treatment and it's a truly wonderful collaboration.”
“Casi Divas,” which translated means “Almost Divas,” is the story of four ambitious and beautiful young women from four very different corners of Mexico, who get caught up in the frenzy that sweeps the country during a nationwide talent search for a lead role in a movie. Behind the scenes, the show’s powerful producer clashes with his on-again, off-again lover, who happens to be Mexico’s biggest actress and expects to land the part.
Produced by Luz María Rojas ("The Mask of Zorro", "And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself", "Curandero"), the film stars Maya Zapata (“La Misma Luna/Under The Same Moon”, “Bordertown,” “De la Calle”) Ana Layevska (“Querida Enemiga,” “Cansada de Besar Sapos,” “La Madrastra”) Patricia Llaca (“Efectos Secundarios,” “La Habitacion Azul”) Daniela Schmidt (“Sea of Dreams,” “Corazon Marchito”) and Julio Bracho (“Bajo la Sal,” “Arrancame la Vida”).

EMPTY NEST
[El nido vacío/(2008)Argentina-Spain-France-Italy/2009 USA release] - (1 hr 31 min)
Director Daniel Burman
Distrib-Website synopsis: When their last child leaves home, a middle-aged couple suddenly finds itself alone for the first time in years. While the husband tackles the empty-nest syndrome with vivid fantasies, his wife throws herself into a whirlwind of activities.
"A man and a woman floating on water. An image, suggesting both tranquillity and death. EMPTY NEST started with a series of images and ideas about the space that kids occupy and later leave empty. About marriage, about the couple. The film has a lot to do with accepting one’s own decline. I think that in order to deal with this, our only escape lies in the creation of a fantasy world." -DANIEL BURMAN
