CERTIFIED COPY
Opens on March 11, 2011
CERTIFIED COPY, the playful and provocative new romantic drama from legendary auteur Abbas Kiarostami (TASTE OF CHERRY, THE WIND WILL CARRY US). Juliette Binoche (THE ENGLISH PATIENT, CACHÉ) won the Best Actress prize in Cannes for her performance in this captivating story of a couple's apparent chance meeting in beautiful Tuscany.
Binoche plays a gallery owner living in a Tuscan village who attends a lecture by a British author (opera star William Shimell, in his cinematic debut) on authenticity and fakery in art. Seemingly quite taken by him, she invites him afterwards to tour the countryside.
When he is mistaken for her husband during their trip, they adopt the assumption for themselves and continue their afternoon, discussing love, life and art, and increasingly behaving like a long-married couple. But are they play-acting on a whim or is there more to their seemingly new relationship than meets the eye?
Kiarostami plays a masterful game of hide and seek as he explores the nature of love, marriage and art, and the extent to which pretence can be as significant as the real.
Making his first feature outside of his native Iran, Kiarostami returns to narrative filmmaking after a decade of experimental video projects. Since premiering in Cannes competition, CERTIFIED COPY was also featured at the 2010 New York Film Festival, and will open on Friday, March 11 in New York, with a national rollout to follow.
It will simultaneously be available nationwide on IFC Films’ video on demand platform, available to over 50 million homes in all major markets.
106 minutes. In Italian, French and English with English subtitles.
An IFC Films release. Not rated.
