Queer cinema makes a "cumback" ... starting TODAY!!!
Queer aka LGBT-Cinema
My apologies for the graphic slugline, but it's nearly 3am and I've just returned from a double-feature of the tranny documentary Paris Is Burning (yeah, it was so amazing I sat through it twice).
However, that's not the reason for starting this thread for as I write this TWO - count 'em - 2 gay/queer features are opening in NYC (& elsewhere).
This thread will document the release patterns of these films and anyone who has actually watched a current queer film will be welcome to post a review here. Don't count on me for that as I only go to critically acclaimed films and most queer cinema tends to get trounced by the crix (last recommended was 2007's Shortbus).
Asinine comments are really not required, even if you think this thread is worthless to straight males it does serve a purpose by providing knowledge to non-homosexual audiences about film titles, stars, etc. that homophobes might want to avoid in future.
Also, closeted friends may try to occasionally lure you into an unfamiliar gay-oriented nightclub or theater, so you will now be able to head off any similar entreaties to the local arthouse and avoid a situation that could prove uncomfortable at best.
I'll never forget my first time watching Prick Up Your Ears (in southern Missouri no less) only to find that I was a single male moviegoer amidst a plethora of male couples and singles alike. I liked the movie, but my first experience with a gay movie audience was a tad freaky. But most of my distress was caused by my own paranoid mind.
I've since learned that "most" gays here in my new home of NYC could care less about "straights" and my occasional excursions (like the one listed at the top) have been enjoyable and invitation-free (no foot tapping, if you know what I mean).
So keep an open mind and this thread may become helpful to gays, queers, and straights alike. We all just need to try to keep the stupidity to a minimum.
I'll try to do my part, and hopefully you'll do likewise.

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS set to Open on December 3, 2010! (Rated R)
Press release
ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS AND LIDDELL ENTERTAINMENT WED ON
I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS
Jim Carrey/Ewan McGregor starrer due December 3, 2010**
(LOS ANGELES, August 26) – Roadside Attractions and Liddell Entertainment have acquired U.S. and Canadian rights from EuropaCorp to I LOVE YOU PHIILLIP MORRIS, co-directed and co-written by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (co-writers of BAD SANTA), based on the non-fiction book by former Houston Chronicle investigative reporter Steve McVicker, and starring Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Leslie Mann and Rodrigo Santoro.
The eagerly-anticipated film, produced by Andrew Lazar and Far Shariat with Luc Besson as executive producer, has been a buzz-worthy title since world premiering at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, screening as part of Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival and opening to huge critical-acclaim internationally. The North American deal was announced jointly by Howard Cohen,Co-President of Roadside Attractions and Mickey Liddell of Liddell Entertainment.
Roadside Attractions plans a December 3, 2010 release.
“Audiences who know this is from the creators of Bad Santa will be thrilled that it’s as outrageous as they’d expect,” said Liddell, who partnered with Roadside Attractions in releasing Chris Rock’s GOOD HAIR in 2009. “It’s a true-life, daring, crazy love story with fascinating lead performances by Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor”
“Jim and Ewan once again prove themselves to be among the rare group of A-list actors who take the risks, embrace them and wildly succeed,” added Cohen. “This is a film that everyone has been talking about, and we’re thrilled it became available again, as we had been in hot pursuit of it at Sundance and were disappointed it was one that got away.”
I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS is the improbable but true story of a spectacularly charismatic conman’s journey from small-town businessman to flamboyant white-collar criminal, who repeatedly finds himself in trouble with the law and on the lam, brilliantly escaping from the Texas prison system on four separate occasions – all in the name of love.
EuropaCorp. was represented by CAA and WME, and the deal negotiated by Howard Cohen and attorney Greg Bernstein on behalf of Roadside Attractions and Liddell and attorney Robert Darwell of Shephard Mullin on behalf of Liddell Entertainment.

Networks will distribute the film day-and-date in theatres and on the cable network starting February 20, 2009.
In 2006, Selditch and Tate made a one-off TV special about Jay McCarroll for Bravo called "Project Jay." "Eleven Minutes" picks up where that story ends. Selditch and Tate are both award-winning producers and directors for "Gourmet's Diary of a Foodie." Their television program "Architecture School," that aired on the Sundance Channel, was named by Time Magazine as one of the 'Top 10 TV Series of 2008.'
"here! is proud to be distributing this skillfully crafted and highly entertaining documentary," said Mark Reinhart, West Coast General Manager and Executive Vice President Distribution and Acquisitions, Regent. "The acquisition of 'Eleven Minutes' continues our mission to distribute fun and innovative content."
The feature documentary "Eleven Minutes" chronicles Jay McCarroll's year-long journey while preparing his first independent runway show for New York's Fashion Week in Bryant Park, and the subsequent selling of his line to stores.
The result is an in-depth, painfully raw and humorous exploration of the creative process and the constant balancing of commerce with art, fame with talent, and reality TV with actual reality.
The acquisition deal for "Eleven Minutes" was negotiated by Mark Reinhart for Regent and both Selditch and Tate for Eleven Minutes Film, Inc.

LITTLE ASHES set to be released on DVD by Jan 26, 2010!!!
LITTLE ASHES
opening March 2009/DVD in 2010
The young life and loves of artist Salvador Dali, filmmaker Luis Buñuel and writer Federico Garcia Lorca.
Synopsis: In 1922, Madrid is wavering on the edge of change as traditional values are challenged by the dangerous new influences of Jazz, Freud and the avant-garde. Salvador Dali arrives at the university; 18 years old and determined to become a great artist. His bizarre blend of shyness and rampant exhibitionism attracts the attention of two of the university's social elite - Federico Garcia Lorca and Luis Buñuel.
Salvador is absorbed into their decadent group and for a time Salvador, Luis and Federico become a formidable trio, the most ultra-modern group in Madrid. However as time passes, Salvador feels an increasingly strong pull towards the charismatic Federico - who is himself oblivious of the attentions he is getting from his beautiful writer friend, Margarita.
Finally, in the face of his friends' preoccupations - and Federico's growing renown as a poet - Luis sets off for Paris in search of his own artistic success. Federico and Salvador spend the holiday in the sea-side town of Cadaques. Both the idyllic surroundings and the warmth of the Dali family sweep Federico off his feet. Salvador and he draw closer, sharing their deepest beliefs, inspirations and secrets, convinced that they have found a kind of friendship undreamt of by others. It is more than a meeting of the minds; it is a fusion of souls.

The New Twenty is a completely modern gay/straight dramatic comedy about a family of five close friends - a hyper-smart and sexy "urban tribe" living in New York amid the highs and lows of a Wall Street world destined to disappear overnight.
Being gay or straight isn't the issue with this group; staying connected as they move into the next phase of life is: Felix (Sadoski) holds a torch for Julie (Bilderback), but alpha-male Andrew (Locke) may propose to her; Ben (Fickes) cruises for guys and self-worth online; Tony (Wei Lin) looks for commitment from his handsome professor boyfriend.
Refreshingly bold and vividly acted, Chris Mason Johnson's feature debut is an accomplished, sophisticated film about the latest generation of almost-thirty-somethings, caught between the exuberance of one era and the soul-searching of the next.
Filmmaker Chris Mason Johnson -- Before filmmaking, Chris had an early career as a dancer, performing in major ballet and modern companies throughout the U.S. and Europe; as a soloist with the Frankfurt Ballet in Germany; as a member of the Feld Ballet and Lar Lubovitch Dance Companies; and alongside Mikhail Baryshnikov in the White Oak Dance Project. After graduating in Film and Video studies from Amherst College he became Head of Development at Open City Films and worked as script editor and analyst at Miramax, Dimension, Disney and Fine Line Features. Kirby Dick's documentary OUTRAGE "outs" Anti-gay legislators hiding in the closet!!!
Outrage
Feature Documentary, 2009, 87 min
Directed by: Kirby Dick
Tribeca'09 synopsis: Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick (This Film Is Not Yet Rated) delivers a searing indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians who actively campaign against the LGBT community they covertly belong to. Outrage boldly reveals the hidden lives of some of our nation's most powerful policymakers, details the harm they've inflicted on millions of Americans, and examines the media's complicity in keeping their secrets. Read More
MOVIE website-http://www.outragethemovie.com/
DVD available on Jan 19, 2010!!!
The Director Interviews: Kirby Dick, Outrage
By Nick Dawson
Whether his subjects have been small and personal or large and institutional, documentarian Kirby Dick has always dedicated himself to telling important and often provocative stories. He made his directorial debut in 1986 with Private Practices: The Story of a Sex Surrogate, but afterwards segued into television work, taking eleven years before he returned with his sophomore film. However, Outrage is not frivolous in its revelations; though Dick outs gay politicians past and present, he does so not to spread gossip but with the intention of revealing the hypocrisy of their anti-gay actions. In a way, Outrage, like This Film Is Not Yet Rated, goes beyond the usual parameters of a documentary as it sets out not only to reveal taboo truths but also to have a direct and positive effect on the world it depicts. "Sex Positive"
Award-Winning HIV Documentary Set for NEW DATE:
Limited Release June 12, 2009
[Based on the book "Sex Positive: A Frontlines Memoir of the Battle Over Safer Sex" -Now available in paperback]
LOS ANGELES -- December 1, 2008 -- here! Films, the theatrical distribution and worldwide sales division of here! Networks, announced today on World AIDS Day it has acquired North American distribution rights to the documentary, "Sex Positive," from the director Daryl Wein and produced by Wein and David Oliver Cohen.
here! Films acquired this documentary from Ro*Co Films, and its sister company Regent Releasing will distribute the film in select U.S. cities.
Sex Positive Image"Sex Positive," Wein's first feature-length documentary, made its world premiere in competition at the 2008 SXSW Film Festival and went on to win the Grand Jury Prize at LA Outfest in 2008.
Wein began his promising film career after graduating from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and went on to direct the short film, "Unlocked," starring Olivia Thirlby ("Juno"), which had its world premiere at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival.
"Daryl's insight into the life and work of Richard Berkowitz explores the explicit bravery of an unrecognized activist in an era of fear and uncertainty," said Mark Reinhart, West Coast General Manager and Executive Vice President Distribution and Acquisitions, Regent. "'Sex Positive' carries a vital message still today about an epidemic that's hitting American youth hard, as HIV rates have nearly doubled between 2001 and 2006." Reinhart continues, "Regent continues our support of emerging filmmakers like Daryl with a message of education and responsibility around World AIDS Day."
"Sex Positive" explores the life of Richard Berkowitz, a revolutionary AIDS activist in the 1980's, whose incomparable contribution to the invention of safe-sex practices has never been aptly credited.
Berkowitz along with Dr. Joseph Sonnabend (a controversial virologist and AIDS doctor) and beloved activist/musician Michael Callen emerged from the epicenter of the epidemic as community leaders, demanding a solution to the problem before anyone else would pay attention. Through the eyes of Berkowitz, the audience is made witness to a graphic testimony of sex, death and betrayal, while placing the invention of "safe sex" in a fresh and compelling context.
"Both in government and the gay population, the widespread silence during the early years of the AIDS crisis is absolutely shocking," said Daryl Wein, director of "Sex Positive." "People my age were not born of the era in which the crisis of AIDS forced behavioral change." Wein continues to say, "I'm proud to be releasing Sex Positive' through here! Films as I feel it is my duty to challenge the complacency of my generation by instilling the values of those forgotten heroes."

Review:
French filmmakers have always been the kings of love-triangle comedies, but now the team of Olivier Ducastel & Jacques Martineau have concocted the wildest mix of straight and gay affairs to date!
French stars Valeria Bruni Tedeschi ("Feelings") & Gilbert Melki ("Changing Times") play 'Béatrix' & 'Marc', a couple of fun-seeking parents (they sing & dance) who have taken their grown-up kids out of the city to the sunny environs of Mariscos beach. The house they are staying in was a posthumous gift from Marc's aunt and they're summer abode seems to hold some secrets of the past unbeknownst to the family till now.
First inkling of a BIG secret comes when Béatrix notices her son 'Charly' and friend 'Martin' choosing separate rooms to sleep, while Marc notices that Charly is spending too much time in the shower. With the dad figuring Charly for a masturbation freak and his mother postulating on his gayness the summer fireworks start off long before Bastille Day.
I won't spoil the fun by telling you the rest, suffice to say that this is one of those comedies that starts by tickling you and builds to laugh-out-loud complications only the best French sex farces seem to create. And yes, the fun & frolic ends with a goofy musical number at the end (a la "8 Women") so guaranteed to leave the theater with a smile.
If you need a laugh to break up all of the festival dramas then get on the door line early, you might get lucky!!!
[In French (subtitled) / USA distrib: Strand Releasing]
NOTE: All of the situations are of an adult nature, so leave the kids at home for this one as there's plenty of male and female nudity (you know those crazy French, they're not shy).
Supporting characters/Cast
Laura (the daughter) - Sabrina Seyvecou
Michaël - Yannick Baudin
Laura's boyfriend - Sébastien Cormier
Barkeep - Marion Roux
Festival synopsis:
Mariscos Beach is the Mediterranean paradise where Marc and his wife Beatrix vacation with their adult children. But over the course of this hilarious, sexy romp, the couple suspects their straight son is gay and the perfect marriage is tested by the chance meetings. With Valerie Bruni-Tedeschi, Gilbert Melki, Jean-Marc Barr.
