MACHINE GUN PREACHER
Starring Gerard Butler
Opening September 23, 2011 with limited release
Based on the inspirational true story, Machine Gun Preacher is about Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds an unexpected calling as the savior of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children. Gerard Butler (300) delivers a searing performance as Childers, the impassioned founder of the Angels of East Africa rescue organization in Golden Globe-nominated director Marc Forster’s (Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland) moving story of violence and redemption.
Synopsis:
When ex-biker-gang member Sam Childers (Butler) makes the life-changing decision to go to East Africa to help repair homes destroyed by civil war, he is outraged by the unspeakable horrors faced by the region’s vulnerable populace,
especially the children.
Ignoring the warnings of more experienced aide workers, Sam breaks ground for an orphanage where it’s most needed—in the middle of territory controlled by the brutal Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a renegade militia that forces youngsters to become soldiers before they even reach their teens.
But for Sam, it is not enough to shelter the LRA’s intended victims. Determined to save as many as possible, he leads armed missions deep into enemy territory to retrieve kidnapped children, restoring peace to their lives—and eventually his own.
The explosive, real-life tale of a man who has rescued over a thousand orphans from starvation, disease and enslavement, Machine Gun Preacher also stars Michelle Monaghan (Due Date), Kathy Baker (Cold Mountain), Madeline Carroll (Mr. Popper’s Penguins), Academy Award® nominated Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) and Souleyman Sy Savane
(“Damages”).

"300" (reviewed)
"300" is really about 1 man, 1 land, & 1 blood-splattered BLAST!!! (w/ nudity for the fanboys, too!!!) Gerard Butler fans UNITE! Forget the "Phantom of the Opera," and go tell the Spartans to be prepared for plenty of CGI-gore galore!
[Rated R for graphic battle sequences throughout (decapitations & dismemberment), some sexuality and nudity (nipples, boobs, & butts)]
3-1/2 stars for guyflickers ONLY! [(2006)USA/2007 release/WB/Rated R] - (1 hr. 57 min.)
Co-written & Directed by Zack Snyder
Co-writers: Kurt Johnstad and Michael B. Gordon
Source: Graphic novel by Frank Miller (& Lynn Varley)
Lead characters/Cast
Leonidas (King of Sparta/age 45) - Gerard Butler
Leonidas (7-8 yrs old) - Eli Snyder
Leonidas (age 15/Wolf scenes) - Tyler Neitzel
Review:
"Madness? ... This Is SPARTA!!!" -Leonidas
Welcome to the Battle of Thermopylae (circa 480 B.C.): the Persian army (which numbers around 250,000+) VS. 300 Spartans (+ assorted Greek Acadians). The two armies meet for a battle that should have ended in three minutes, but
turns into a 3 day struggle and clearly ranks as one of the most unforgettable 'underdog' fight of all time (w/ apologies to Rocky Balboa).
Not only that, but the Persian enemy is not merely 'human', but also consists of metal-masked 'Immortals', an axe-wielding giant (who would give a Middle Earth troll a run for his money), an armored rhino (w/ a really long, very sharp
horn), and giant, armored elephants (that look like they were stolen right out of LOTR? - 2 out of 3 ain't bad).
But forget all that. This movie is ALL Gerard Butler ("Phantom of the Opera: the Musical") as 'King Leonidas', the very loud and spectacularly fearless leader of the Spartans. Seriously, how can you not like a commander-in-chief with his own bottomless pit (no child or pet guards surrounding it? Oh those Spartans).
Well, after being forced to see "300" on a normal screen due to numerous IMAX sellouts and my reticence to buy online, I FINALLY GOT INTO THE IMAX.
Luckily, I was early, because sure enough, the damn 1,000 seat+ IMAX theater filled up AGAIN! I mean, like how long has this sucker been out.
Anyway, my final analysis is that there is virtually zero difference between the IMAX viewing and a regular theater. Why, you may ask? Yes, it is bigger, but the whole point of IMAX is being able to see details in the smallest areas of the picture, but with "300" it's all shot in either extremely tight close-ups or CGI on blue screen (which is flat as a pancake = no depth).
Face it, this movie is guys on a beach stabbing each other for two hours, there's no need for IMAX. Now. "Star Wars" was amazing on IMAX because the 'space' backdrop went on forever with many minute details created by the ILM team showcased brilliantly on the gigantic IMAX screen.
Bergman once said that "God is details." And without details, you don't need IMAX. "300" was still entertaining the 2nd go-round, but I spent 5 extra bucks for the upgrade for nothing.
So if you don't have an IMAX near you, you didn't miss a thing ...
P.S. CGI-blood spurts look even more fake on an IMAX screen.

TRIVIA INFO (from IMDb.com)
The film was shot on a soundstage with green & blue screens in Montreal. The movie never claims to be historically correct. According to an interview with IGN.com, Director Zack Snyder says that fighting styles and formations (particularly the Spartan's phalanx) were purposefully changed - making them historically inaccurate - so they'd "look cool" and work better for movie purposes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"300" is based somewhat loosely on Frank Miller's 1998 comic book mini-series (specifically 5 issues of Dark Horse Comics, which were later released as a single hardback). Changes from history were made by Miller and director Zack Snyder so as to appeal to a wider audience and create a more exciting and visually stunning action movie, rather than a typical historical epic. Frank Miller was inspired by the original Battle of Thermopylae after viewing Rudolph Mate's "The 300 Spartans" as a child. His perception of the 'hero' concept changed greatly after seeing the Spartans make their sacrifice. The 1962 film
starred Richard Egan, Ralph Richardson, & Diane Baker.
