Interesting trek between the past and the future might have been better as a stage play, but those interested in the Harlem Renaissance should give this one a chance! 3 stars (out of 4) [(2004)USA] - (1 hr. 34 min.) Written & directed by Rodney Evans Characters (*in the past)/Cast Perry - Anthony Mackie Bruce Nugent - Roger Robinson Marcus - Larry Gilliard Jr. Zora Neale Hurston* - Aunjanue Ellis Young Bruce* - Duane Boutte Langston Hughes* - Daniel Sunjata Jim - Alex Burns Wally Thurman* - Ray Ford Mini-review: African-American gay cinema is rarely treated seriously, and this historically based film is worth a look despite some of its stagey trappings. First-time feature filmmaker Rodney Evans does a better-than-average job of blending episodes from the past with the present while comparing the somewhat reduced pressures of today versus those gays faced during the Harlem Renaissance in 1930s New York City. Actor Anthony Mackie (who's career has exploded since making this film) is a good-looking gay man with an appreciation for fine poetry. When he's taken under the wing of ex-poet 'Bruce Nugent' (Roger Robinson) he is treated to re-enacted stories of life in Harlem and the establishment of an African-American artistic era. Not for all tastes, but if you like the arts or are seeking deeper genres of gay cinema then this one's certainly worth a look. Website _______________NOTES Synopsis (from website): BROTHER TO BROTHER is a feature length narrative film which follows the emotional and psychological journey of a young Black gay artist as he discovers the hidden legacies of the gay and lesbian subcultures within the Harlem Renaissance. After being found in an intimate, sexual encounter with another young man, Perry is thrown out of his house by his family ... as his friend Marcus is performing his new poetry for him, an elderly man, Bruce, appears seemingly out of nowhere and begins reciting verse to them. He disappears just as quickly and elusively as he arrived, before they get a chance to talk to him. In his library research for a class project, Perry finds a book about the Harlem Renaissance and recognizes a poem ("Smoke, Lilies and Jade" by Bruce Nugent) as the same one that the elderly man was reciting. They encounter each other again at the homeless shelter where Perry works. He confronts Bruce about who he is and begins to ask him about the Harlem Renaissance. They go on a literal and metaphorical journey to the house that was known as "Niggeratti Manor" which was the creative center for the younger, rebellious generation of the Harlem Renaissance as they created their revolutionary literary journal, "Fire!" ... Perry learns about the lives and personalities of Wallace Thurman, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston and Aaron Douglas and sees how they became a surrogate family for Bruce ... He sees the pride that Bruce exuded in those times in terms of being Black, gay and unashamed ... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ |
