GERHARD RICHTER PAINTING
a Fascinating Portrait of the Famed Artist
Has US Theatrical Premiere Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Film Forum-NYC
Film Forum is pleased to give Corinna Belz's new portrait, GERHARD RICHTER PAINTING, its US theatrical premiere beginning Wednesday, March 14.
"It's pointless to talk about painting," said Richter in 1965.
The artist, considered one of the world's greatest contemporary painters, now nearly 80 years old, speaks of his life's
work, as a small film crew documents his creative process between the months of April and September, 2009. Blunt, provocative, unashamedly curmudgeonly and iconoclastic (but never cynical), the Richter says he's:
"interested in things he doesn't understand," ...
"painting is a secretive business," ...
"each painting is an assertion that tolerates no company." ...
"You have to distrust your parents and see through them."
Born in 1932 in Dresden (which became East Germany), he left for the West nearly 30 years later. When his renowned
American gallerist Marian Goodman visits, they recall a 1984 show during which their relationship began.
Extensive contemporary scenes of the artist painting and interviews from the 1960s and '70s give a sense of his creative development - his colorful abstractions, photorealist portraits, and paintings inspired by politics and history as well as more intimate statements. His final words as he applies and then scrapes off vast globs of paint:
"Man, is this fun."
German filmmaker Corinna Belz's previous work includes the 2007 short, GERHARD RICHTER'S WINDOW, documenting the creation of the artist's 115-square-meter stained glass window for the Cologne Cathedral, the first film project he had agreed to in 15 years.
Says Belz: "My interest was to show Gerhard Richter at work: how he moves, how he applies paint to canvas, his compelling squeegee technique. The purpose of the film was not to reflect the art historical discourse… The most important thing for me was to show something uniquely visual."
GERHARD RICHTER PAINTING will play March 14 - 27, at Film Forum, West Houston Street
(W. of 6th Avenue), with screenings daily at 1:15, 3:15, 6:00, 8:00, and 10:00.
GERHARD RICHTER PAINTING (2011, 97 mins.) Written and Directed by Corinna Belz. Produced by Thomas Kufus. Cinematography: Johann Feindt, Frank Kranstedt, Dieter Stürmer, Andy Schocken. Sound design: Dominik Schleier. Editor: Stephan Krumbiegel. Germany. In English and German with English subtitles. A Kino Lorber Release.

Tamra Davis' JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT: THE RADIANT CHILD Opens July 21st!

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT:
THE RADIANT CHILD
Tamra Davis’s Revealing Portrait of the ‘80s Art World Sensation
Documentary Has U.S. Theatrical Premiere Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at Film Forum-NYC
Film Forum is pleased to present the U.S. theatrical premiere of JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT: THE RADIANT CHILD, opening Wednesday, July 21, 2010.
Filmmaker Tamra Davis charts the meteoric rise and fall of her late friend, the painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, born in 1960. In the crime-ridden New York City of the 1970s, he covers the city with the graffiti tag SAMO.
In 1981 he puts paint on canvas for the first time, and by 1983 he is an artist with “rock star status.” In 1985 he and Andy Warhol become close friends and painting collaborators, but they part ways and Warhol dies suddenly in 1987.
Basquiat’s heroin addiction worsens, and, tragically, he dies of an overdose in 1988. The artist was 25 years old at the height of his career, and today his canvases sell for more than a million dollars.
With compassion and insight, Tamra Davis details the mysteries that surround this charismatic young man, a painter of enormous talent whose fortunes mirrored the rollercoaster quality of the downtown scene he seemed to embody.
Combining never-before-seen interview footage of Basquiat with commentary from friends and art-world luminaries, the film offers a moving portrait of one of the leading lights of late 20th century art.
JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT: THE RADIANT CHILD will have a 2-week engagement July 21 – August 3, 2010
at Film Forum, 209 W. Houston St. (W. of 6th Av.) with screenings daily at 1:15, 3:15, 6:00, 8:00 and 10:00.

LORBER RELEASES
THE GATES (2005)
A DOC ABOUT CHRISTO AND JEANNE-CLAUDE'S WORK AT NEW YORK'S CENTRAL PARK
ON DVD October 12, 2010!
New York, NY - August 30, 2010 - Lorber Films is proud to release on DVD the Antonio Ferrera and Albert Maysles documentary The Gates (2005), which chronicles Christo and Jeanne-Claude's almost 15-years odyssey to create the largest public art installation in history: a "golden river" of 7,503 fabric-paneled gates in Central Park.
After a much-publicized premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, as well as national bookings across the US, The Gates will become available to the general public on October 12, 2010.
Jeanne Claude and Christo
In 1979, artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude approached the mayor of New York City with the idea to create one of the most ambitious public art installations in history: a river made of recyclable orange nylon curtains covering 23 miles of walkways in Central Park. Their proposal was promptly rejected after a vote by the board.
In 1980 David and Albert Maysles began filming Christo and Jeanne-Claude as they proposed The Gates project to the City of New York. The recording of these debates and discussions continued until the project was declined one year later in 1981 and the footage was vaulted uncut for 23 years.
After Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City, announced, on January 22, 2003, that a contract had been signed permitting both artists to realize their work of art (named The Gates, Central Park, New York, 1979-2005), the work on the projects started right away. And after years of political negotiations and bewildering opposition (and controversy), The Gates was finally completed in 2005.
Antonio Ferrera and Albert Maysles' film chronicles the artists' twenty-six year commitment to transform the winter darkness of the iconic park into a garden of light and color. Weaving together archival interviews with committees, politicians and on-site conversations with visitors, the film ultimately poses some fundamental questions about the value of art in our contemporary society.
As Christo and Jeanne-Claude have always done for their previous projects, The Gates was entirely financed by the artists through their C.V.J. Corp, (Jeanne-Claude Javacheff, President) with the sale of preparatory studies, drawings, collages, and scale models, earlier works of the fifties and sixties, and original lithographs on other subjects. The artists do not accept sponsorship or donations.
