"INDIE" cinema
When I was growing up, Independent films were pretty much relegated to B-movie companies with Roger Corman's being the most famous. Then when I reached college I was introduced to foreign films and low-budget independent films through either the Campus cinema program or the Independent Film Circuit screenings in smaller theaters.
When I started this website six years ago, "Indies" were starting to make a name for themselves as well as garnering Oscar buzz with their talented ensembles. This recognition attracted A-list talent and the A-listers attracted the attention of the major studios who started forming their own pseudo-Independent subsidiaries.
These successes further propelled the Indie "genre" along with advances in digital projection and the expansion of the Arthouse cinema circuit (mainly via the Landmark cinemas franchise). Over the last several years studio films found themselves competing with Indies for major Oscar categories and many times losing to these lower-budgeted counterparts.
Today the Indie market is glutted with marginally creative product and many studios have since closed their indie branches and left the market wide open for anyone with a digital camera, a script, and the willingness to travel it to the major festivals (and sometimes self-distributing). Video-On-Demand has also allowed more films to find audiences without a theatrical release at all, while low-financed-unscripted-improvised fare (referred to as "Mumblecore") has made inroads into the market with very little to lose.
This page will try to monitor the titles that are "sticking" in the marketplace until the current glut thins out and the Indie community figures out how it wants to be represented in future.
One piece of advice: Ideas are great, but a little entertainment doesn't hurt, so get with the program filmmakers or lower the prices so consumers can hit more Indies instead of having to decide between a $10,000 thesis project and dozens of documentaries, foreign fare, and the occasional Oscar-caliber Hollywood film.

Iron Hoss Films, Stealth Media Group in association with Media House Capital
Present
A MAGNOLIA PICTURES RELEASE
I MELT WITH YOU
A film by Mark Pellington
Opens Theatrically December 9, 2011
Cast: Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven, Christian McKay, Carla Gugino and Sasha Grey
Richard (Thomas Jane), Ron (Jeremy Piven), Jonathan (Rob Lowe) and Tim (Christian McKay) are old college buddies who gather for a week each year in Big Sur to celebrate Tim’s birthday and catch up with each other’s lives.
On the surface, they look like typical men in their forties, with careers, families and responsibilities. But as with most people, there is more to them than meets the eye.
As the week progresses, they go down the rabbit hole of excess: mountains of drugs are consumed to a blaring rock 'n' roll soundtrack, parties with much younger women spin out of control. Exhausted and run ragged, they bare their souls and their reunion takes a much darker turn.
When a promise from their past is brought to light, none of their lives will ever be the same.
From director Mark Pellington, I MELT WITH YOU is a visually dazzling, wild and woolly trip deep into the male psyche, driven by four amazingly committed and profound performances from Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven, Rob Lowe and Christian McKay.
Running Time: 123 minutes

MoMA-NYC press release
Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You
November 18–21, 2011
For the sixth year running, MoMA’s Department of Film, in association with IFP and its quarterly publication Filmmaker, screens the five nominees for the Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You award.
The five nominees represent this year’s best American independent films on the festival circuit that have yet to be picked up for theatrical distribution.
Past nominees include Laurel Nakadate’s The Wolf Knife, Mike Ott’s Littlerock, Nina Paley’s Sita Sings the Blues, So Yong Kim’s In Between Days, and Ronald Bronstein’s Frownland.
The 2011 nominees were selected by senior members of the Filmmaker editorial staff and Joshua Siegel, associate curator in MoMA’s Department of Film.
The award will be presented to the winner at IFP’s Twenty-First Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards on November 28, 2011. Filmmakers take part in a Q&A following selected screenings.
Organized by Joshua Siegel, Associate Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art; Joana Vicente, Executive Director, IFP; Scott Macaulay, Editor, Filmmaker magazine; and Milton Tabbot, Senior Director, Programming, IFP.
2011 nominees:
Scenes of a Crime
2011. USA. Produced and directed by Blue Hadaegh, Grover Babcock.
Using actual footage from a 10-hour police interrogation and videotaped confession, Hadaegh and Babcock’s masterful Scenes of a Crime is at once a coolly impassioned social justice documentary, a keen-eyed epistemological inquiry, and a gripping police procedural.
Centered around the tearful—and disputed—confession of a father in a “shaken baby” child homicide case, the film explores the psychologically manipulative tactics used to extract confessions by law enforcement, as Hadaegh and Babcock bring in interrogation experts as well as expert defense witnesses to argue their cases.
What emerges is complex, troubling, and, finally, heartbreakingly human. Scenes of a Crime won the Grand Jury Award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. 86 min.
Friday, November 18, 2011, 6:00 p.m., Theater 3, mezzanine, Education and Research Building
Sunday, November 20, 2011, 1:00 p.m., Theater 2, T2
Without
2011. USA. Written and directed by Mark Jackson.
One of the most startling and chilling movies of the year: A woman sets out into the woods. Quiet will do her good. A little calm.
Or not.
In Without, Joslyn Jensen physically embodies a mind, a soul, set adrift, but it’s Mark Jackson's imagining of the low-cloud Pacific Northwest that provides a setting for the slow disintegration of an obsessive young woman sent to care for a mute,
catatonic man.
Minimalist yet resplendent, shot with an inexpensive consumer camera, Without is what modern regional cinema can be: a cinema of pained eroticism and knowing fear. 88 min.
Friday, November 18, 2011, 8:30 p.m., Theater 3, mezzanine, Education and Research Building
Sunday, November 20, 2011, 3:30 p.m., Theater 2, T2
The Redemption of General Butt Naked
2011. USA. Produced and directed by Daniele Anastasion, Eric Strauss.
A chilling portrait of the Liberian warlord Joshua Milton Blahyi, nom de guerre “General Butt Naked.” Blahyi led an army of child soldiers during his nation’s brutal 14-year civil war, and professed to have committed thousands of acts of genocidal murder before abruptly laying down his weapons and reinventing himself as a Christian evangelist.
The power of Strauss and Anastasion’s documentary lies not only in harrowing and senseless stories of terror that devastated entire families and villages, but also in the General’s conversion experience from a messianic cult figure—one who believed that fighting naked except for a pair of leather shoes and an AK-47 made him supernaturally immune to bullets—into a messenger of God (or unrepentant, cunning charlatan…) who today preaches a message of atonement and forgiveness in a country where truth, reconciliation, and justice remain distant aspirations. 90 min.
Saturday, November 19, 2011, 3:30 p.m., Theater 3, mezzanine, Education and Research Building
Sunday, November 20, 2011, 6:00 p.m., Theater 2, T2
Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same
2011. USA. Written and directed by Madeleine Olnek.
In her directorial feature debut, Olnek combines the camp of 1950s sci-fi B-movies with an LGBT love story.
With a plot that Ed Wood would salivate over, three lesbian aliens from the planet Zotz travel to Earth to save their planet. Their mission: fall in love and have their hearts broken.
What unfolds is a hilarious exploration of the New York City singles scene as the aliens go on speed dates, place personal ads, and display their native ways of showing affection (which, unsurprisingly, doesn’t seem to faze New Yorkers). 76 min.
Saturday, November 19, 2011, 6:00 p.m., Theater 3, mezzanine, Education and Research Building
Monday, November 21, 2011, 8:15 p.m., Theater 2, T2
Green
2011. USA. Written and directed by Sophia Takal.
Green begins as a satirical portrait of two over-privileged Brooklynites who head to the country, where Sebastian (Lawrence Levine) will write a blog about his pitiful attempts to become a farmer. Sebastian’s thin, pretty girlfriend Genevieve (Kate Lyn Sheil) soon realizes she doesn’t really know why she’s there.
Her sense of emptiness is quickly filled with narrow-eyed suspicion of a friendly neighbor (played by Takal), which turns into a fantasy-fueled, unpredictable rage.
Woven from the tangled web of female jealousy that Takal herself admits to harboring, an unexpected thriller emerges in this microbudget film, which premiered at this year’s SXSW film festival to awards and acclaim. 75 min.
Saturday, November 19, 2011, 8:30 p.m., Theater 3, mezzanine, Education and Research Building
Monday, November 21, 2011, 6:00 p.m., Theater 2, T2

Iron Hoss Films, Stealth Media Group in association with Media House Capital Presents
Running Time: 116 minutes

IFC MIDNIGHT Presents
A Film by Todd Rohal
THE CATECHISM CATACLYSM
Opens on OCTOBER 19, 2011 at the IFC CENTER in NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 4th
at the DOWNTOWN INDEPENDENT in LOS ANGELES, and on VOD NATIONWIDE on OCTOBER 26th
Storytelling in all its forms is skewered in THE CATECHISM CATACLYSM. In this divinely bizarre and funny tale, wild characters infuse stories within stories until the lines between the Bible, Mark Twain, and campfire tales are hilariously blurred.
Father Billy (Steve Little), an eccentric young priest, is forced to take a sabbatical by his superiors when he is discovered telling inappropriate parables to his flock. Billy tracks down his high-school idol Robbie (Robert Longstreet), who begrudgingly agrees to a canoe trip.
On the water, the two men reminisce about Billy's days as the keyboardist in a Christian band and Robbie's as a guitarist for a metal band. When night approaches, they realize they have lost their way--and that's when things get weird.
**OFFICIAL ENTRY: SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL**
**OFFICIAL ENTRY: SXSW FILM FESTIVAL**
Buoyed by commanding comedic performances by Steve Little (EASTBOUND & DOWN) and Robert Longstreet (GREAT WORLD OF SOUND), THE CATECHISM CATACLYSM shines a light on the power of absurd fiction.
On the heels of his festival hit THE GUATEMALAN HANDSHAKE and preceding his just-wrapped (UNTITLED-2012) comedy starring Johnny Knoxville and Patton Oswalt, THE CATECHISM CATACLYSM is the latest from the unique comedic sensibility of writer/director Todd Rohal, and is a production of Rough House Pictures (David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, Jody Hill).
Directed/Written By: Todd Rohal
Starring: Steve Little and Robert Longstreet

The Perfect Age of ROCK 'N' ROLL
A film by Scott Rosenbaum
Starring
KEVIN ZEGERS - JASON RITTER - TARYN MANNING - LUKAS HAAS - PETER FONDA
With Original Songs by Steve Conte of The New York Dolls, and Composer Andrew Hollander
According to rock ‘n’ roll lore, age 27 is a fateful milestone. From Robert Johnson, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison to Kurt Cobain, all stars we lost at this very age.
World famous rock star Spyder (Kevin Zegers – Transamerica, Frozen) has achieved fame and fortune with a smash hit debut album. This blinding success however, is built on the Faustian pact that capitalized on the genius of his long lost childhood best friend and band mate, Eric Genson (Jason Ritter – NBC’s The Event, Good Dick).
Now Spyder retreats to his small hometown after his sophomore effort flops. Reconnecting with Eric after a seven year estrangement, the two recall their youthful ambitions and reexamine the choices they’ve made.
Accompanied by the band’s ambitious, fiery manager (Taryn Manning – ABC’s Hawaii 5-0, Hustle & Flow, 8 Mile), the legendary music impresario August West (Peter Fonda – Easy Rider, 3:10 to Yuma) and a raucous crew of musicians, they set off on a cathartic journey along historic Route 66 that brings them closer to each other, their history and their destiny.
Fueled by a stellar rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack that includes songs by Nirvana, Muddy Waters, Alice In Chains, Bob Dylan, Jane’s Addiction, Howlin’ Wolf, The Violent Femmes, Jeff Buckley, Son House, Donovan, Robert Johnson, America, and more, The Perfect Age of Rock ‘N’ Roll fully captures the energy, rebellion, and thrills of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.
The Perfect Age of Rock ‘N’ Roll also stars Lukas Haas, Kelly Lynch, Lauren Holly, Ruby Dee, Billy Dee Williams, Michael K. Williams, James Ransone and Aimee Teegarden.

THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER
Opening in NYC on Friday, July 22, 2011 at the Angelika Film Center!
From first-time writer/director David Robert Mitchell comes THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER, a poignant and tender coming-of-age drama.
This story follows four young people on the last night of summer - their final night of freedom before the new school year starts. The teenagers cross paths as they explore the suburban wonderland they inhabit in search of love and adventure - chasing first kisses, elusive crushes, popularity and parties.
While looking for the iconic teenage experience, they discover the quiet moments that will later become a part of their youth they look back on with nostalgia.
Inspired by Mitchell's experiences growing up in Michigan, THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER is a beautifully rendered portrait of summertime adolescence and the search for human connections. The kids in Mitchell's world may be lost, a little confused and full of angst, but ultimately the kids are alright in this life-affirming, truthful and fresh take on the teen genre.
Starring a cast of young attractive newcomers in their feature film debut and produced by Adele Romanski (THE FREEBIE), THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER is having its international premiere at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival in the International Critics' Week section, the first American film in five years to be selected for this honor.
THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER had its U.S. premiere in March at the SXSW Film Festival and Conference, where it received a special jury prize for Best Ensemble Cast.

New Independent Movie On Demand Reviews
08/03/11_On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand and from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Here's this week's roundup from our writers..._
_1. __TRUST_By Adam Schartoff_
What would you do if you found out your daughter had fallen prey to an online sex predator?
TRUST is David Schwimmer’s second feature wearing the director’s cap. His first, RUN, FATBOY, RUN (2007) was an amusing enough romantic comedy starring Simon Pegg and Thandie Newton.
David Schwimmer, Clive Owen / TRUST (Millennium)

_2. __3 BACKYARDS_By Amy Slotnicj_
Two-time winner of Sundance’s directing award, Eric Mendelsohn follows up his first feature film JUDY BERLIN, with the poetic drama, 3 BACKYARDS.
3 BACKYARDS follows three interwoven stories, all set during one autumn day in a quaint Long Island town. A businessman, a housewife and a child are the main characters all of whom appear at first as very familiar archetypes.
Embeth davidtz, Edie Falco / 3 BACKYARDS (Screen Media)
_3. FLYPAPER_By Amy Slotnick_
FLYPAPER is a hybrid that combines the heist film genre with comedy, in which two teams of bank robbers descend on the same bank at the same time, while the bank’s security system is down for several hours of upgrade.
The bank robbing teams are opposites - one is a group of sleek, seasoned criminals with the equipment and experience to do the job, and the other is a pair of hillbillies who lack any clue as to what they are doing.
The two groups resolve to work together and share the hostages, who include Patrick Dempsey as a charismatic savant, and Ashley Judd, as a practical and beautiful bank teller.

at the ifc center and nationwide on vod!
Eighteen years after disappearing without a trace, Cornelius Rawlings returns to his family's farm.
While his parents are long deceased, Cornelius's brothers continue to live in isolation on this forgotten piece of land.
Ezra is a freak for two things: cleanliness and Jesus. Amos is a self-taught artist who fetishizes sports and Satan.
Although back home, Cornelius is still distant. In between challenging strangers to one-on-one games, he huffs and drinks the days away. The family's high-school sports demons show up one day in the guise of a plumber and a pretty girl.
Only a mysterious drifter can redeem their souls on 4th and goal.
Triple-threat actor/writer/director (and disturbingly gifted athlete) Michael Tully creates a backwoods world that's only a few trees away from our own, complete with characters on the edge of sanity that we can actually relate to.
A hero tale gone wrong, SEPTIEN is funny when it's inappropriate to laugh, and realistic when it should be psychotic. Goooaaaaaaaaal!
Cast:
MICHAEL TULLY (COCAINE ANGEL, SILVER JEW)
ROBERT LONGSTREET (UNDERTOW, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS)
ONUR TUKEL (DING-A-LING-LESS, HOUSE OF PANCAKES, SERGIO LAPEL'S DRAWING BLOOD)

PALADIN PRESENTS
FOOTPRINTS
Directed by Steven Peros
OPENS Friday, April 15, 2011 in New York (The Quad) and Los Angeles (Laemmle Sunset 5)
FOOTPRINTS, directed by award-winning writer Steven Peros, author of the play and screenplay for The Cat’s Meow (directed by Peter Bogdanovich) and twice-published Samuel French playwright.
FOOTPRINTS is a haunting, hopeful and unforgettable mystery, starring Sybil Temtchine, H.M. Wynant and Pippa Scott. The film chronicles a young woman’s journey of discovery on Hollywood Boulevard in one day, from sunrise to sunset.
Sybil Temtchine (Ten Benny, Passion of Ayn Rand) stars as a young woman who wakes up at dawn on the handprints and footprints of the famed Chinese Theatre in Hollywood with no idea who she or how she got there. Upon awakening, she wonders if she isn’t, in fact, lost in a dream.
And perhaps she is.
Regardless of whether she is dreaming or wide awake, Our Gal sets off on her journey, from one person to the next, one famous locale after the other. Among the Hollywood fringe denizens with whom she comes into contact are a pair of tour guides (Charley Rossman, John Brickner), two super hero impersonators (Catherine Bruhier, Riley Weston), a Scientology auditor (Joe Roseto), and a memorabilia shop owner (R.J. Cantu).
She also finds herself disquietingly followed by a Stranger (Kirk Bovill) who may be real or a figment of her unsteady imagination. Although her feet only fleetingly leave Hollywood Boulevard, by sundown Our Gal will piece together the revelatory truth about her existence and the reason for her awakening, forcing her to make choices that will literally result in either her life
… or death.
In their heart-breaking portrayals of two veterans of the boulevard and all it represents, FOOTPRINTS marks the return to the big screen of The Searchers’ Pippa Scott and H. M. Wynant (The Twilight Zone, Sam Fuller’s Run of the Arrow, Budd Boetticher’s Decision at Sundown).

COLD WEATHER
Opens Friday, February 4, 2011 in New York City and on February 11, 2011 in Los Angeles
A FILM BY AARON KATZ
A self-styled Sherlock Holmes leads an unlikely team of irregulars in this charming comic mystery from indie auteur Aaron Katz. After abandoning a promising academic career in forensic science, aimless Doug (Cris Lankenau) returns to Portland to live with his more responsible big sister Gail (Trieste Kelly). He easily lands a dead-end job working in an ice factory, but his latent passion for detective work is stoked when his ex-girlfriend, Rachel (Robyn Rikoon) goes missing.
Armed with a handful of arcane clues and a vast knowledge of the world of Sherlock Holmes, Doug enlists Gail and co-worker Carlos (Raúl Castillo) in a ramshackle investigation that draws the slacker sleuths into Portland's underground. What they discover is a complex trail of clues, leading them increasingly close to the discovering the mysterious truth about Rachel.
Building on the lyrical style and naturalistic performances of his two previous features, DANCE PARTY USA and QUIET CITY, Katz offers a refreshingly idiosyncratic spin on genre conventions. COLD WEATHER is simultaneously the story of a brother and sister getting to know each other after years apart and a mystery in the great tradition of crime and detective fiction.
COLD WEATHER premiered to critical acclaim at the 2010 SXSW Film Festival.

2011 Academy Award-Nominated Live-Action Short Films
Opens Friday, February 11, 2011 @ the IFC Center-NYC
A showcase of the five live-action short films nominated for this year’s Academy Awards.
THE CONFESSION – Quiet and sincere 9-year-old Sam is worried about making his first confession. His conscience is clear, therefore he cannot hope for any relief from the experience. He and his friend Jacob decide to remedy that situation, but their initially innocent prank turns unexpectedly tragic. (UK, 26 min., Director: Tanel Toom)
WISH 143 – A fifteen-year-old boy with only months to live is granted one wish from the Dreamscape Charity. But David doesn’t want to go to Disneyland or meet Gary Neville; what he really wants is an hour alone with a naked woman. (UK, 24 min., Director: Ian Barnes)
NA WEWE – 1994: There is civil war in Burundi, a small country of Central Africa directly bordering Rwanda. A near genocidal confrontation opposes rebels mainly composed of ethnic Hutus and a national army with a majority of Tutsis. This short film relates a sadly frequent episode of this fratricidal conflict: the attack by rebels of a minivan carrying ordinary citizens. (Belgium, 19 min., Director: Ivan Goldschmidt)
THE CRUSH – Ardal Travis is in love. There’s just one problem. He’s an 8 year old schoolboy and the object of his affection is his Second Class teacher, Miss Purdy. But when her boyfriend arrives on the scene Ardal is heartbroken. His reaction, though, is a little unexpected. He challenges Miss Purdy’s boyfriend to a duel. To the death. (Ireland, 15 min., Director: Michael Creagh)
GOD OF LOVE – Lounge-singing darts champion Raymond Goodfellow finds his prayers are answered — literally — when he receives a mysterious package of passion-inducing darts. The catch is that the one woman he loves — Kelly, a drummer in his band — is already in love with Ray’s best friend Fozzie, the guitarist in the band. But when Ray uses the darts in a loony scheme to resolve this strange romantic triangle, he learns a surprising lesson about unrequited love and discovers his own place in the universe. Romance is in the air in this bohemian charmer. (USA, 18 min., Director: Luke Matheny)

2010 ARCHIVES(scroll down)
(2010 release)-PRINCE OF BROADWAY Opens in NYC (Sept. 3rd) & in Los Angeles (Sept. 17)
Press release
Prince of Broadway
In Theaters September 3, 2010 in NY and September 17, 2010 in LA!
Prince of Broadway is the story of Lucky and Levon, two men whose lives converge in the underbelly of New York's wholesale fashion district. Lucky, an illegal immigrant from Ghana, makes ends meet by soliciting shoppers on the street with knock-off brand merchandise.
Levon, an Armenian-Lebanese immigrant, operates an illegal storefront with a concealed back room where counterfeit goods are showcased to interested shoppers. Lucky's world is suddenly turned upside down when a child is thrust into his life by a woman who insists the toddler is his son.
While Lucky copes with his new domestic dilemma, Levon struggles to save a marriage that is falling apart. The seedy side of the wholesale district is revealed through a journey that continually confronts the interplay between what is fake and what is real.
Set in the shadow of the Flatiron building and soaked in the colorful bustle of Broadway, the film is as much a brutal drama as it is a tender comedy. Shot in a fast-paced guerilla style that is akin to the hustler lifestyle, the film reveals the lives of immigrants in America seeking ideals of family and love, while creating their own knock-off of the American Dream.

Director Michael Imperioli’s
THE HUNGRY GHOSTS
Opens October 1, 2010!
The Tibetans describe a type of hell in which souls with tiny mouths are afflicted with enormous, insatiable bellies. These inhabitants are considered ‘the hungry ghosts.’
Michael Imperioli’s directorial debut THE HUNGRY GHOSTS portrays an eclectic group of New Yorkers in search of spiritual and emotional fulfillment.
Frank (Steven R. Schirripa, The Sopranos, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) a late-night radio host, is trapped in a tenuous relationship with his son, Matthew (Emory Cohen in his screen debut.), as a result of Frank’s drug addition and gambling problems.
When Matthew storms out of a therapy session with his father, he becomes lost in the labyrinth of New York City. With Matthew missing, Frank is forced to confront his ex-wife, Sharon (Sharon Angela, The Sopranos, Tony & Tina’s Wedding), over his fractured relationship with his son.
While searching for his son, Frank meets Nadia (Aunjanue Ellis, Ray, True Blood.) Nadia recently left her destructive, alcoholic lover Gus (Nick Sandow, Connie & Carla, Third Watch) and is trying to get her life back on track. She turns to spirituality to help her find peace as Gus aggressively tries to win her back.
THE HUNGRY GHOSTS deals with the intersection of several perishing lives stuck in a cycle they wish to escape, capturing the zeitgeist of our post-millennium New York City, in which the desperation of the West collides with the religious teachings of the East.
Running time: 106 Minutes
Rating: Not Yet Rated
Opens Theatrically on 10/01/10

2009 Independent Spirit Award nominations announced (Awards presented March 5, 2010)!
Spirit Award nominations announced
'Precious', 'Last Station' score the most nods
[Source: www.Variety.com/Story By DAVE MCNARY]-A pair of disparate dramas, Lionsgate's "Precious" and Sony Classics' "The Last Station," have dominated Spirit Award nominations with five each. The duo will face off against Fox Searchlight's "500 Days of Summer," National Geographic's "Amreeka" and Focus Features' "Sin Nombre" in the best feature category.
Matt Dillon and Taraji P. Henson announced the nods Tuesday morning at the Sofitel Hotel and winners be announced March 5, two days before the Oscars. Film Independent has shifted the ceremonies to the LA Live campus in downtown from its traditional beachside site in Santa Monica, and from Saturday afternoon to Friday night.
"Precious," centered on the life of an abused teen mother, also scored nominations for director Lee Daniels, lead actress Gaborey Sidibe, supporting actress Mo'Nique and writer Geoffrey Fletcher for best first screenplay. "The Last Station," focused on Leo Tolstoy's marriage, received nods for lead actress Helen Mirren, supporting actor Christopher Plummer and Michael Hoffman, who took noms in both the director and screenplay categories.
"I think it resonated because it's about the existential problems of love and marriage and how difficult that is -- which is something everyone can relate to," Hoffman told Daily Variety. He added that he was taken by surprise by the nominations and found out after a workout in Manhattan. "I got back to my hotel room and there were 50 emails for me," he noted.
Oscilloscope's "The Messenger" took four noms, including best first feature for director Oren Moverman, screenplay for Alessandro Camon and Moverman, supporting actor for Woody Harrelson and supporting actress for Samantha Morton.
Fox Searchlight, Oscilloscope and Sony Classics tied for most distributor nods with seven each.
In addition to Daniels and Hoffman, best director noms went to Joel and Ethan Coen for "A Serious Man," Cary Joji Fukunaga for "Sin Nombre" and James Gray for "Two Lovers."
Besides Mirren and Sidibe, female lead nods went to Maria Bello for "Downloading Nancy," Nisreen Faour for "Amreeka" and Gwyneth Paltrow for "Two Lovers." Male lead noms were received by Jeff Bridges for "Crazy Heart," Colin Firth for "A Single Man," Joseph Gordon-Levitt for "500 Days of Summer," Souleymane Sy Savane for "Goodbye Solo" and Adam Scott for "The Vicious Kind."
"The Last Station" and "The Messenger" will face competition in screenplay from Lee Toland Kirkland for "The Vicious Kind," Greg Mottola for "Adventureland" and Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber for "500 Days of Summer."
"We're jumping around with joy right now," Neustadter told Daily Variety. "I think we connected with the voters because our film really did have a singular vision. Everyone wanted to make the same movie."
Sony Classics' "An Education" scored a nom in the best foreign film, the only category in which the British/French production was eligible. It faces competition from France's "A Prophet," Sweden's "Everlasting Moments," South Korea's "Mother" and Chile's "The Maid."
"I think this represents a real endorsement for 'An Education' in all the categories," said Sony Classics chief Tom Bernard.
"A Serious Man" was announced Tuesday as winner of the Robert Altman Award, given to a director, casting director and ensemble cast.
Paramount's surprise hit "Paranormal Activity," which has grossed $107 million domestically from a $15,000 budget, received a nom for best first feature. It will face "A Single Man," "Crazy Heart," "Easier with Practice" and "The Messenger."
"Paranormal Activity" didn't get a nod for the John Cassavetes Award to honor the best feature made for under $500,000. Those noms went to "Big Fan," "Humpday," "The New Year's Parade," "Treeless Mountain" and "Zero Bridge."
Summit's "The Hurt Locker," which dominated Monday night's Gotham Awards, wasn't eligible this year. It earned Spirit nominations last year for actors Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie.

About Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) After debuting with a program in the 1979 New York Film Festival, the nonprofit IFP has evolved into the nation's oldest and largest organization of independent filmmakers, and also the premier advocate for them. Since its start, IFP has supported the production of 7,000 films and provided resources to more than 20,000 filmmakers' voices that otherwise might not have been heard. IFP believes that independent films broaden the palette of cinema, seeding the global culture with new ideas, kindling awareness, and fostering activism. Currently, IFP represent a network of 10,000 filmmakers in New York City and around the world. Through its workshops, seminars, conferences, mentorships, and Filmmaker Magazine, IFP schools its members in the art, technology, and business of independent filmmaking (there are special programs to promote racial, ethnic, religious, ideological, gender, and sexual diversity). IFP builds audiences by hosting screenings, often in collaboration with other cultural institutions and also bestows the Gotham Independent Film Awards™, the first honors of the film awards season. When all is said and done, IFP fosters the development of 350 feature and documentary films each year. For info: http://www.ifp.org

Presenting Sponsors: A Diamond Is Forever, Focus Features, Stella Artois and Universal Pictures.

When hard times hit a small copper town, mineworker Power (writer-director Gold) only wishes one thing- that he’d learned to play drums.
But his father (McKean) could never afford to buy him a drum set, so Power has embraced the next best thing- air drumming.
Tired of the constant ridicule from his father and the other mine workers and with nothing but a few dollars, some cereal, and the support of his Aunt Joanie (Lynch), Power sets off across the country to the “paradise” of Newark, where an underground air drumming crew has invited him to join their team.
But as the big air drumming competition looms, so does a rival -- multi-millionaire drummer Dallas H. (Grenier), who thinks air drumming is an abomination and seeks to destroy Power and his crew.
More than just a rock’n’roll comedy, ADVENTURES OF POWER is an epic fable about trusting your own heartbeat as a means of changing the world.

Bobcat Goldthwait's WORLD’S GREATEST DAD on August 21, 2009!!! [Rated R/Sundance]
Press release
Magnolia Pictures presents
WORLD’S GREATEST DAD
From writer/director Bobcat Goldthwait (Sleeping Dogs Lie, Shakes the Clown) comes WORLD’S GREATEST DAD, a thoughtful but outrageous comedy about a man that learns the things you want most may not be the things that make you happy, and that being lonely is not necessarily the same as being alone.
Robin Williams stars as Lance Clayton, a single dad who has learned to settle in life. He dreams of being a rich and famous writer, but has a thankless job as a high school poetry teacher.
His only son Kyle (Daryl Sabara) is an insufferable jackass who won’t give his father the time of day. He is dating Claire (Alexie Gilmore), the school’s adorable art teacher, but she doesn’t want to get serious -- or even acknowledge publicly that they are dating.
Then, in the wake of a freak accident, Lance suffers the worst tragedy and greatest opportunity of his life. He is suddenly faced with the possibility of all the fame, fortune and popularity he ever dreamed of, if he can just live with the knowledge of how he got there.
Written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, WORLD’S GREATEST DAD stars Robin Williams, Alexie Gilmore, Daryl Sabara, Geoff Pierson, Henry Simmons and Mitzi McCall. The film was produced by Tim Perell, Howard Gertler, Sean McKittrick and Richard Kelly and co-produced by Sarah de Sa Rego.
Magnolia Pictures will release WORLD’S GREATEST DAD on August 21, 2009.
WORLD’S GREATEST DAD is rated R and has a run time of 99 minutes.
