THE MOTH DIARIES
on April 20, 2012!
Acclaimed director Mary Harron (AMERICAN PSYCHO, THE NOTORIOUS BETTIE PAGE) returns with the chilling story of Rebecca (Sarah Bolger), a young girl who, haunted by her father’s suicide, enrolls in an elite boarding school for girls.
Before long, Rebecca’s friendship with the popular Lucy (Sarah Gadon) is shattered by the arrival of a dark and mysterious new student named Ernessa (Lily Cole). Lucy falls under Ernessa’s spell and becomes emotionally and physically consumed by her glamorous new friend.
Rebecca, whose overtures of concern are rejected by Lucy, finds herself lost and confused. She begins to develop a crush on her handsome English teacher, Mr. Davies (Scott Speedman) and immerses herself in the Gothic vampire novel Carilla for his class.
Rebecca starts to suspect that Ernessa is a vampire, but, despite the suspicious deaths that begin to occur, her fears are
treated as simple girlish jealousy. As the bodies of young girls pile up and the line between reality and the supernatural starts to blur, Rebecca decides to take matters into her own hands and get rid of Ernessa.
Who can say what is real and what is unreal to the heart consumed by passion and a mind afire with loss?
Based on the bestselling novel by Rachel Klein, THE MOTH DIARIES is a harrowing story of the anxieties, lusts and fears of adolescence.
Running time: 82 minutes

Norwegian filmmaker Anne Sewitsky's
HAPPY, HAPPY
Opens on Friday, September 16, 2011
in New York and Los Angeles
On behalf of Magnolia Pictures, HAPPY, HAPPY, the feature directorial debut of Norwegian filmmaker Anne Sewitsky. Winner of the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and featured in the New Directors/New Films festival, HAPPY, HAPPY is a warm yet thought-provoking comedy that establishes Sewitsky as a director to watch.
The film was just chosen as the official Norwegian entry for the Academy Awards® in the Best Foreign Language
Film category, and will open on Friday, September 16 in New York (and LA) at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema.
Family is the most important thing in the world to Kaja. She is an eternal optimist in spite of living a dead-end life in the Norwegian countryside with a man who would rather go hunting with the boys than have sex with her.
But when "the perfect couple" moves in next door, Kaja struggles to keep her emotions in check. Not only do these successful, beautiful, exciting people sing in a choir, they have also adopted a child – from Ethiopia!
While at first they seem like perfect friend material, their differences begin to manifest in increasingly disturbing ways. And when Christmas comes around, it becomes evident that nothing will ever be like before – even if Kaja tries her hardest to hope otherwise.
88 mins. A Magnolia Pictures release. Rated R

Miranda July’s
THE FUTURE
Opens July 29, 2011
On behalf of Roadside Attractions Miranda July’s THE FUTURE, a critical standout at this year’s Sundance, Berlin and SXSW film festivals.
With her first feature, ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW, writer-director July established an immediately identifiable voice—curious, playful, with an offbeat attunement to the particularities of modern life.
In her wildly inventive—and remarkably poignant—sophomore film, she tells the story of a thirty-something couple who, on deciding to adopt a cat, change their perspective on life, literally altering the course of time and testing their faith in each other and themselves. THE FUTURE will open on July 29.
Sophie (Miranda July) and Jason (Hamish Linklater) live in a small LA apartment, have jobs they hate, and in one month they’ll adopt a sick cat who will need around-the-clock care.
Terrified of their looming loss of freedom, they quit their jobs, disconnect their Internet, and set out to pursue their modest dreams. But as the month slips away, the two find themselves living in two starkly different realities.
Sophie and Jason must reunite with time, space and their own souls in order to reconnect. Using elements of magical realism—a talking cat who narrates his own sad tale, a living t-shirt, and a strangely familiar Moon—the film bravely creates its own universe.
With pathos and humor, it invites us to recognize the bittersweetness of this very moment.
91 mins. A Roadside Attractions release.

Jill Andresevic's
LOVE ETC.
OPENS July 1, 2011 in New York City
LOVE ETC. is Jill Andresevic's acclaimed multi-character documentary depicting the many stages of modern metropolitan romance set entirely in New York. The film, which is the first production from Jonathan Tisch’s Walnut Hill Media, had its world premiere at the Hamptons International Film Festival last October, where it won the Audience Award for Best Feature Documentary.
Filmed over the course of a year, LOVE ETC. is actually five different relationship stories—all of them real—combined in a single film. With characters ranging in age from 18 to 89, the youthful end of the spectrum is represented by high school sweethearts Gabriel and Danielle, whose first-love romance is tested as graduation nears. On the other end of the spectrum are Albert and Marion, octogenarian lovebirds whose chance meeting turned into a 50 year marriage, and who remain as enamored of one another today as they were when they first married.
In between, are two men: Ethan, who is straight and the divorced father of two teenagers, and Scott, who is gay and single, and the soon-to-be father of twins. Despite their complicated lives, both are on a quest to find new partners and believe that love is only one blind date away.
The final couple, Chitra and Mahendra, are engaged when we meet them— their big, traditional Indian wedding is the centerpiece of the film—but, once the honeymoon is over, the realities of marriage change and challenge their life together.
A love letter to love itself, Andresevic’s film celebrates the diversity of these couples, as well as the vast and varied city they inhabit.
LOVE ETC. was produced by Walnut Hill Media, a company formed in 2008 by Jeffrey Stewart and Jonathan Tisch, who served as executive producer on the film, whose own visit to the City Hall Marriage Bureau to obtain a marriage license in 2007 -- an occasion defined by a broad range of couples all united by their common belief in love -- provided the initial inspiration for their maiden production.
Release Date: July 1, 2011 in New York City and July 15, 2011 in Los Angeles

VOD REPORT
Cherry Goes and Does It Well (VOD Hidden Gem)
02/17/11-Media savant T Tara Turk goes deep inside cable TV to reveal Video On Demand's Hidden Gems so even the busiest of our readers can get the most out of On Demand TV. Tell Tara what VOD shows you think deserves her attention...
Cherry Goes Dating on BBC America On Demand (VOD Hidden Gem)_
My new dream job? Programming at BBC America. When I was five, it was to be either a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader (blame my mother the Cowboys fan. Don’t panic because I’ve seen the reality show on Country Music Television and have since shifted) or a doctor (why be one when you can watch one on “Grey’s Anatomy” without the insurance payments?).
This new choice is real given I professed my love here for Law & Order: UK On Demand and now I am addicted to the new series “Cherry Goes Dating,” featuring Cherry Healey.
As a reality aficionado (don’t judge), it takes a lot (or a lot of No My God moments) to impress me. Cherry Healey is a British writer and TV personality that focuses on Women’s Issues (I had to look her up) which frightened me given the amount of scary women’s Issue focuses there are out there. But in this WELL CRAFTED, very thoughtful mini-doc, Cherry really does focus on women’s issues and not the usual “what women do wrong.” It is riveting.
Cherry, who’s like your best friend from college that you haven’t seen in a while, goes to visit several women in various stages of dating - from two teenagers on hormone overload to a fifty something hothouse flower who’s rediscovering herself after two divorces.
I also have to give a special shout out to the 20-something arm candy Barbie clone who’s a regular on a gold digger site, the 30-something who goes through not only a breakup and miscarriage but also a brain tumor (don’t miss her remarkable post script) and the women who lost her husband in the Tsunami in Thailand.
Not only does Cherry talk to them but she takes a pretty active role in setting a few up, talking to a few of their dates, laughing with them on their triumphs and sympathizing with their heartbreaks (some are absolutely “I’ve SO been there” cringing but not unbearably so – well, judge Esther’s story for yourself).
Skillfully and simply put together, the focus is always on the women. Cherry interjects a bit of her own life only to help us and the women understand where she’s coming from, giving a pretty rational and caring commentary along the way.
Those darn Brits have done it again with their focus on the quality of the show instead of the shock factor (that’s what I’ll say in my possible interview - heh) as they’ve realized some people’s reality is quite a shock already.
While I go check out 'Cherry Does Drinking" (the next installment) tell me which of the ladies Cherry interviews do you relate to most?

Cherry Goes and Does It Well (VOD Hidden Gem)

THE IMPERIALISTS ARE STILL ALIVE!
A FILM BY ZEINA DURRA
OPENS in NYC theaters on April 15, 2011!
A successful visual artist working in post-9/11 Manhattan, Asya (Elodie Bouchez) lives the life of the hip and glamorous, replete with exclusive art parties, supermodels, and stretch limousines, while she carefully follows the situation in the Middle East on television.
Out partying one night, Asya learns that her childhood friend, Faisal, has disappeared-the victim of a purported CIA abduction. That same night, she meets Javier, a sexy Mexican PhD student, and romance blossoms. Javier finds Asya's conspiracy theories overly paranoid-but nothing in Asya's world is as it seems.
Zeina Durra's atmospheric debut feature is a splendidly alluring and intelligent look at the way the war on terror seeps into the texture of everyday American life.
Gorgeous 16 mm grain imbues the film with an anachronistic feel that interestingly evokes times past. The Imperialists Are Still Alive! is an exceptional work and heralds the arrival of Durra as an exciting new directorial talent.

PHASE 4 FILMS SCORES WITH THE DVD RELEASE OF KATIE ASELTON'S ACCLAIMED ROMANTIC DRAMEDY CO-STARRINGDAX SHEPARD
"THE FREEBIE"
**OFFICIAL ENTRY: 2010 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL**
**OFFICIAL ENTRY: 2010 SXSW FILM FESTIVAL**
DVD AND VOD RELEASE SET FOR JANUARY 11th
What IF YOU WERE GIVEN ONE NIGHT OFF FROM YOUR RELATIONSHIP?
New York, NY (November 22, 2010) - Phase 4 Films is proud to announce the January 11th, 2011 home entertainment release of Katie Aselton's critically acclaimed THE FREEBIE.
Since premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January, THE FREEBIE has become one of the most talked about independent films of the year. Written, directed and starring Katie Aselton (from the hit TV show THE LEAGUE), THE FREEBIE centers on a happily married couple with a stalled sex life who look to spice things up by agreeing to an experiment: for one night each partner can freely cheat on the other with no repercussions. Dax Shepard (PARENTHOOD) co-stars alongside Aselton. The film was executive produced by Aselton and Mark Duplass (CYRUS) and produced by Adele Romanski (MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER).
Phase 4 Films is releasing THE FREEBIE on DVD and VOD on January 11th, 2011.
Darren (Shepard) and Annie (Aselton) have an enviable relationship built on love trust and communication -- they still enjoy each other's company and laugh at each other's jokes, but, unfortunately, they can't remember the last time they had sex. When a dinner party conversation leads to an honest discussion about the state of their love life, they begin to flirt with a way to spice things up. The deal: one night of freedom, no strings attached, no questions asked. Could a "freebie" be the cure for their ailing sex life? And will they go through with it? With a keen eye and fresh take, Aselton's directorial debut shines with crisp storytelling and fine-tuned performances. THE FREEBIE is an insightful and humorous look at love, sustaining relationships, and the awkwardness of monogamy when the haze of lust has faded.

MoMA-NYC to honor Oscar winning director KATHRYN BIGELOW in 2010!
Press release
MoMA's THIRD ANNUAL FILM BENEFIT TO HONOR
KATHRYN BIGELOW
ON NOVEMBER 10, 2010
Career Retrospective of Bigelow's Films to Follow in June 2011
NEW YORK, July 8, 2010-The Museum of Modern Art's third annual Film Benefit, to be held on November 10, will honor writer-director Kathryn Bigelow. Renowned for her Academy Award-winning film The Hurt Locker (2008), for over 30 years Bigelow has crafted a body of films that defy genre and gender expectations including such acclaimed works as Near Dark (1987), Point Break (1991), and Strange Days (1995).
As the first female director to garner directing awards by the Academy, BAFTA, and the DGA, Bigelow creates immersive movies that leave the viewer simultaneously exhilarated and affected, thinking, and feeling, while transforming the language of genre films to serve her content.
Within the Museum's collection, a selection of Bigelow's films are represented, including Point Break, Blue Steel (1989), Near Dark, The Loveless (1982), and The Set-Up (1978).
In June 2011, MoMA's Department of Film will present a retrospective of Bigelow's entire career with screenings of all of her feature films. In conjunction with the retrospective, the Museum has acquired Bigelow's paper archive which documents all of her film projects from The Set-Up to The Hurt Locker, from pre-production research through production notes to post-release publicity and press materials. The archive contains both process and creative documentation such as storyboards, scripts, filming schedules, location scouting reports, and casting notes. The collection also includes unrealized scripts and other projects.
In addition to a reception and dinner, the Film Benefit will be highlighted by a special presentation recognizing Bigelow's acclaimed directorial work. The event raises funds to ensure that great works of cinema continue to join the collection of The Museum of Modern Art.
Tables to the Film Benefit are available for $75,000, $50,000, and $25,000; individual tickets are $5,000 and $2,500 per person. Tables and individual tickets may be reserved by calling 212-708-9680 or by visiting MoMA.org/filmbenefit2010.

NEW YORK, April 20, 2010--The legacy of Maya Deren, considered America's first prominent avant-garde filmmaker, film theorist, and visionary of experimental cinema, is explored in the exhibition Maya Deren's Legacy: Women and Experimental Film, a five-month film series and video installation in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters and lobby galleries, from May 14 through October 4, 2010.
Deren's innovations—performing in front of the camera, using semi-autobiographical content, and meshing literary, psychological, and ethnographic approaches with rigorous technique—laid the groundwork for future generations of experimental filmmakers, bridging film, performance, and conceptual ideas.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Deren (b. Ukraine, 1917-1961) was a pioneer of experimental cinema as an art form, independent and distinct from Hollywood production values or the dramatic narrative, closer to the modernist and avant-garde art practices of her generation. This exhibition looks at Deren's legacy through her own work and that of a trio of women directors upon whom she had an indelible influence—Carolee Schneemann, Barbara Hammer, and Su Friedrich.
It is organized by Sally Berger, Assistant Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art.
Maya Deren's Legacy: Women and Experimental Film coincides with the publication by MoMA of Modern Women: Women Artists at The Museum of Modern Art (June 2010), which includes an essay by Ms. Berger that explores Deren's aesthetic theories, her films, and her methods of promotion and self-distribution.
It also includes interviews by Ms. Berger with Schneeman, Hammer, and Friedrich, who discuss Deren's impact on their work, revealing how Deren helped to pave the way for future women to enter the field of experimental cinema.
This exhibition is presented in conjunction with MoMA's publication of Modern Women: Women Artists at The Museum of Modern Art (June 2010), and is made possible by the Modern Women's Fund.

Bette Gordon's HANDSOME HARRY hits the road on April 16, 2010!!!
Press release
PALADIN presents
HANDSOME HARRY
OPENING APRIL 16TH IN NEW YORK AT THE IFC CENTER AND SELECT CITIES NATIONWIDE!
Directed by: Bette Gordon
Featuring:Jamey Sheridan, Steve Buscemi, Mariann Mayberry, Aidan Quinn, John Savage, Campbell Scott, Titus Welliver, and Karen Young
HANDSOME HARRY is the latest film by Bette Gordon, whose 1983 feature, “Variety,” remains a signal work of the early American “indie” movement.
Heading an impressive ensemble cast, Jamey Sheridan (“The Ice Storm,” “Syriana”) portrays the title role-- a divorced man, alienated from his grown son, whose life is defined by a number of casual relationships but no intimate ones. A loner by choice, Harry is forced out of self-imposed exile when he is summoned to the deathbed of Tom Kelly (Steve Buscemi), an old Navy pal with one last wish: he wants Harry to seek out another old friend, Dave Kagan (Campbell Scott), and ask his forgiveness for some horrible wrong that Tom, Harry, and their other close friends committed when they were all still in the military.
These men were once like Harry’s family, and Kagan was much more than that, but Harry has avoided them most of his adult life. Traveling thousands of miles—and across three decades of suppressed memories and emotions—Harry must now face each of his old buddies, and must ultimately find the courage to face Dave Kagan.
Until he does, he will never be able to face himself.
Though it takes the form of a classic road movie, the true terrain covered by HANDSOME HARRY is the male psyche. In a series of carefully observed, beautifully acted vignettes, the film explores what brought these men together, what drove them apart, how they betrayed one another and, worse still, how they betrayed themselves.
Gordon, whose emotionally wrenching climax reveals the enormous gulf between who Harry might have been and who he eventually became, proves that, sometimes, it takes a woman to show us what it takes to be a man.

The IFC Center salutes pioneer
New York filmmaker
Bette Gordon!!
Special screening of Gordon’s acclaimed drama LUMINOUS MOTION Monday, April 12th and the cult classic VARIETY Thursday, April 15th
HANDSOME HARRY, Gordon’s latest film starring Jamey Sheridan, Steve Buscemi, Campbell Scott and Aidan Quinn, opens Friday, April 16, 2010
Gordon, Luis Guzman, Will Patton and other special guests to appear in-person
IFC Center is proud to salute New York-based filmmaker Bette Gordon, a director who embodies the essence of independent cinema, with special in-person screenings of her acclaimed features VARIETY and LUMINOUS MOTION, leading up to the release of her latest film, HANDSOME HARRY on April 16th.
A pioneer in the American independent film world and one of the most notable artists to come out of the Tribeca / East Village “No Wave Cinema” underground 1970’s film movement, Bette Gordon is best known for her bold explorations of themes related to sexuality.
Her early short experimental films won numerous awards and festival acclaim worldwide, including showings at the Berlin International Film Festival, The Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Biennial. Variety (1984) marked her debut as a feature film director, and was presented in The Cannes Film Festival’s prestigious Director’s Fortnight. Luminous Motion, Gordon’s next feature, opened to rave reviews in 2000, and HANDSOME HARRY, her latest film, had its premiere at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival and is being released by Paladin in select cities April 16th.
A long time resident of Tribeca, Gordon is also one of the founders of the Collective for Living Cinema, the neighborhood’s first theater, an outpost of avant garde cinema which was located on White Street. In addition, Gordon has been teaching new generations of students about the movie craft as a Professor of Film at Columbia University's graduate film division in New York City, and the Supervisor of the directing program there.
On Thursday, April 15th at 7pm, the IFC Center will present a special screening of VARIETY. The sexually charged tale of a woman’s journey of self discovery, VARIETY is a fascinating independent film that challenges common notions about feminism and pornography. Emerging out of the underground NYC arts scene that produced the late 80’s boom in American independent cinema, VARIETY contains the contributions of an impressive array of talent, including cinematographer Tom DiCillo (Living in Oblivion), actor Luis Guzman (Boogie Nights), a script by the late cult novelist Kathy Acker, and a score by actor and musician John Lurie (Stranger than Paradise).
The film stars Sandy McLeod as a woman who takes a job selling tickets at a Times Square porn theatre, gradually becoming drawn into the life a gangster (Richard Davidson). Will Patton, Spalding Grey and Nan Goldin co-star. Joining Gordon for a post-screening discussion will be a panel of talent from the film’s cast and crew including Luis Guzman, Will Patton, Sandy McLeod and others to be announced. Screening courtesy of Kino.
Bette’s follow up to VARIETY came with LUMINOUS MOTION in 2000, which the IFC Center screens on Monday, April 12th at 7pm. Based on the acclaimed novel History of Luminous Motion, the film is a mother-son road-trip drama reminiscent of BONNIE AND CLYDE. The film stars Deborah Kara Unger (The Game), Terry Kinney (Oz) and marks the first collaboration between Bette Gordon and stage and screen veteran Jamey Sheridan (The Ice Storm).
10-year old Phillip craves speed and light. Obsessed with staying in perpetual motion, he lives the outlaw life on the road with his Mom, who makes ends meet stealing money from men she seduces. After an unexpected detour, Phillip’s world is turned upside-down when Mom settles in the suburbs with a carpenter named Pedro. Determined to escape this nightmare existence, Phillip dispatches Pedro with a homemade remedy, and the two hit the road again. Unfortunately, their past comes back to haunt them when Phillip’s father shows up to reclaim his place at the head of the family. The screening will be preceded by an introduction by Gordon.
HANDSOME HARRY, Gordon’s latest film, is opening on April 16th at the IFC Center as well as select cities across the country. The film marks Gordon’s second collaboration with Jamey Sheridan who heads an impressive ensemble cast which includes Steve Buscemi, Aidan Quinn, John Savage and Campbell Scott.
Sheridan portrays the title role-- a divorced man, alienated from his grown son, whose life is defined by a number of casual relationships but no intimate ones.
