The music performance documentary, or ROCKUMENTARY, is unfortunately the least-attended genre of non-fiction filmmaking. The problem as I see it is that many people don't want to see an artist/band that isn't a personal favorite, but what they fail to realize is that nearly ALL musicians, singers, and performers have both interesting points-of-view as human beings within a select minority, and extremely humorous stories to tell regarding life on the road.

People that get together and form bands are probably the most interesting to film/interview since their personalities and egoes are bound to clash (sometimes on a minute-to-minute basis as evidenced in the Metallica film, "Some Kind of Monster"). Hopefully this page will draw some more audience interest to these unique and talented people who live their lives to entertain the rest of us.

HOW TO GROW A  BAND

Starring the Punch Brothers

Opens Friday the 13th (April 2012) in NYC!

INTERNATIONAL FILM CIRCUIT proudly presents award-winning documentary HOW TO GROW A BAND from director
Mark Meatto and starring multiple Grammy-winning musician Chris Thile and the Punch  Brothers. HOW TO GROW A BAND will be released theatrically on Friday, April 13  in New York.

26 year-old Chris Thile is at a crossroads. His marriage has ended, and his platinum-selling band, Nickel Creek,  has gone on “indefinite hiatus.” But Thile, a perfectionist prodigy who has defied expectations since he picked up the mandolin at age five, has a plan.

Step 1: Write a 45-minute, four-movement elegy to your failed marriage to be played by a traditional bluegrass quintet.
Step 2: Recruit the only musicians  around talented enough to play it and crazy enough to sign on.
Step 3: Make a record, launch an international tour and brace yourself.

Filmed with uncommon access, HOW TO  GROW A BAND explores the birth and evolution of The Punch Brothers: the tensions between individual talents and group identity, between art and commerce, and between innocence and wisdom.

LAST DAYS HERE

Opens in New York City on Friday, March 2, 2012

On behalf of Sundance Selects, LAST DAYS HERE, Don Argott (ROCK SCHOOL, THE ART OF THE STEAL) and  Demian Fenton’s raw yet unexpectedly touching chronicle of cult metal legend  Bobby Liebling’s bid to resurrect his life and career after decades
wasting away  in his parents’ basement.

A one-of-a-kind doc with more bizarre twists than any  fiction, the film premiered at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival and
took the prize  for Best Music Documentary at IDFA in Amsterdam.

LAST DAYS HERE will open in New  York on Friday, March 2 at the IFC Center, with a national rollout to follow. It  will also be available nationwide on Sundance Selects’ video-on-demand platform,  available to over 50 million homes in all major
markets.

Bobby Liebling made his mark in the ‘70s as the outrageous frontman of Pentagram, a “street” Black Sabbath whose heavy metal riffs once blew audiences’ minds. But various acts of self-destruction, multiple band break-ups and botched record deals eventually condemned his music to obscurity.

Now in his 50's, wasted by hardcore drug use and living on the charity of his ever-patient mother and father (a former Nixon advisor), Bobby's music is finally discovered by the heavy metal underground.

With the help of fan-turned-manager Sean "Pellet" Pelletier, Bobby struggles to overcome years of  addiction, loneliness and broken dreams to get back on stage again.

For over three years, filmmakers (and metal musicians) Argott and Fenton are witnesses to  his unbelievable journey, following the triumphs and downfalls of this underground icon at the crossroads of life and death.

THE OTHER F WORD
Hilarious Documentary of Aging Punk Rockers as Fathers

U.S. Theatrical Premiere Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Film Forum-NYC

Film Forum is pleased to present the U.S. theatrical premiere of THE OTHER F WORD, opening Wednesday, November 2. Punk rock dad: an oxymoron? THE OTHER F WORD, with charm and wit, explores the bizarre transformation of punk rockers (featuring Jim Lindberg, a 20-year veteran of the skate punk band Pennywise, whose anthem is "F--- Authority") into soccer dads.

The L.A. punk scene's leading men - among them Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Ron Reyes (Black Flag), Mark Hoppus (Blink 182), Tim McIlrath (Rise Against), and Fat Mike (NOFX) - open up about their troubled adolescence and how, today, they balance profane rage with being conscientious parents.

Among our favorite moments: Fat Mike in a zebra-striped bathrobe having  breakfast in bed with his impossibly adorable little daughter; various rockers  bitching about life on the road (boredom, bad food, too much alcohol and hemorrhoids); and heartfelt moments from Flea and Mark Hoppus sharing intimate  recollections of their fathers.

Other dads featured in the film include Art  Alexakis (Everclear), Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Tony Adolescent (The  Adolescents), Lars Frederiksen (Rancid), skater Tony Hawk, and many others.

THE OTHER F WORD
will  have a 2-week engagement, November 2-15, at Film Forum, 209 W. Houston St.
(W.  of 6th Av.) with screenings daily at 1:00, 3:00, 6:10, 8:10, and 10:10.

THE OTHER F WORD
(20011, 99 mins.) Written and directed by Andrea Blaugrund Nevins. Produced by Cristan Reilly. Executive producers: Morgan Spurlock & Jeremy Chilnick. Director of Photography: Geoffrey Franklin. Edited by Geoffrey Franklin.
With: Jim Lindberg, Flea, Tony Adolescent, Fat Mike, Tony Hawk, Mark Mothersbaugh, Ron Reyes, Tim Mcllrath, Joe Escalante, Mark Hoppus, Lars Fredericksen. USA. An Oscilloscope Laboratories release.

TALIHINA SKY
: The Story of KINGS OF LEON
TO BE RELEASED ON DVD, BLU RAY AND  ITUNES NOV. 1, 2011

DOCUMENTARY Originally PREMIERED ON SHOWTIME®

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 6, 2011) – When three teenaged brothers and their cousin rebelled against their strict, religious Southern upbringing to form a rock band named Kings of Leon, their humble back story garnered almost as much attention as their music.

Many questioned if they were really related and if rumors of their father being a Pentecostal preacher were true.  Since then, the band has achieved worldwide, Grammy® Award-winning success and now, the mystery and myths behind these budding rock legends will be laid to rest in the documentary TALIHINA SKY:  THE STORY OF KINGS OF LEON, premiering on SHOWTIME on Sunday, August 21 at 10 PM ET/PT.

The documentary kicks off at the annual Followill family reunion in the back woods of Talihina, Oklahoma, where the boys return to their roots and unwind with their family.  First-time director and Followill friend Stephen C. Mitchell weaves personal home videos, unedited interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of the band’s journey from their small-town beginnings -- spent in poverty and touring the Bible Belt with their father, a Pentecostal evangelist minister, and their devout mother -- to living the rock star dream.

TALIHINA SKY:  THE STORY OF KINGS OF LEON is produced by Casey McGrath and executive produced by Nathan, Caleb, Jared and Matthew Followill.  The film premiered this spring at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The film premiered  at the 2011 Telluride Film Festival and is an official selection of the 2011 New York Film Festival.

GEORGE HARRISON:  LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD focuses the imaginative and inspired eye of one of  cinema’s most preeminent filmmakers on one of the world’s most influential men.   The film takes viewers on the musical and spiritual voyage that was George  Harrison’s life, much of it told in his own words.  The result is deeply moving  and touches each viewer in unique and individual ways.

Academy  Award®-winning director Martin Scorsese traces Harrison’s life from  his musical beginnings in Liverpool through his life as a musician, a seeker, a  philanthropist and a filmmaker, weaving together interviews with Harrison and  his closest friends, performances, home movies and photographs.  Much of the  material in the film has never been seen or heard before.  The result is a rare  glimpse into the mind and soul of one of the most talented artists of his  generation and a profoundly intimate and affecting work of cinema.

The film includes  interviews with Eric Clapton, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, George Martin, Paul  McCartney, Yoko Ono, Tom Petty, Phil Spector, Ringo Starr and Jackie Stewart.   They speak honestly and frankly about George’s many talents and  contradictions.

“When Martin Scorsese  brings a project to HBO, we all know it is going to be very special, and he has  added to that body of work with this monumental film on George Harrison,” says  Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming.  “From
rock‘n’roll icon to  moviemaker, to spiritual seeker and humanitarian, George Harrison was a true  renaissance man.  This amazing film will illuminate every aspect of Harrison’s  remarkable, multifaceted life.”

Comments Scorsese, “Like so many millions of people, I first came to know George through the music,  which was the soundtrack of our world.  The Beatles’ music, those beautifully  lyrical guitar breaks and solos, those unforgettable songs of George’s like ‘I  Me Mine’ or ‘If I Needed Someone,’ and the images, in magazines, on album  covers, the TV appearances, the newsreel footage, the Richard Lester movies; and  then there was the world after the Beatles, when George and his music seemed to  open up and flower.  I will never forget the first time I heard ‘All Things Must  Pass,’ the overwhelming feeling of taking in that all glorious music for the  first time.  It was like walking into a cathedral.  George was making  spiritually awake music – we all heard and felt it – and I think that was the  reason that he came to occupy a very special place in our lives.  So when I was  offered the chance to make this picture, I jumped at it.  Spending time with  Olivia, interviewing so many of George’s closest friends, reviewing all that  footage, some of it never seen before, and listening to all of that magnificent  music – it was a joy, and an experience I’ll always treasure."

Notes Olivia Harrison, “Martin Scorsese’s intuition towards George was evident the first time we met to discuss this project.  He sensed what George was about:  his music, his strong beliefs, his art, his place in the Beatles’ story and his extraordinary life afterwards.  Marty’s wonderful film has found all of that and more. I always hoped HBO would be our North American partners because of their respect for artistry.  I am doubly happy to be working with their excellent team."

“This film was an extraordinary  journey for all involved and it has been a sheer pleasure working with Martin  Scorsese and Olivia Harrison to bring the amazing story and legacy of George  Harrison to life.  We have found the perfect partner in HBO Documentary Films  and are proud to have them on board to bring this incredible film to North  American
audiences,”
adds Nigel Sinclair.

Exclusive Films International, the international  sales and marketing arm of Exclusive, represents worldwide rights, excluding the  U.S.  Scott Pascucci serves as executive producer for Grove Street and is  coordinating all aspects of the film’s distribution for Grove Street.

Additionally, on  Sept. 27, 2011 Abrams Books will publish Olivia Harrison’s “George Harrison:  Living  in the Material World,” a personal archive of photographs, letters, diaries and  memorabilia from George’s life that reveals the arc of his life, from his  guitar-obsessed boyhood in Liverpool, to the astonishment of the Beatles years,  to his days as an independent musician and bohemian squire.  The book release is  intended to coincide with the release of Scorsese’s film.

Scorsese’s upcoming feature, “Hugo,” a 3D  adaptation of Brian Selznick’s children’s book, starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben  Kingsley, Jude Law, Chloe Moretz and Asa Butterfield, is due to be released in  the U.S. by Paramount Pictures in Nov. 2011.

In 1976, Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and it was followed by a  series of
outstanding successes, including “New York, New York,” “Raging Bull,”  “The Last Temptation of Christ,” “GoodFellas,” “Casino,” “Kundun,” “The Age of Innocence,” “Gangs of New York” and “The Aviator.”  Scorsese’s feature “The Departed” was released to critical acclaim in Oct. 2006, and would go on to win several Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Director.

“Shine a Light,” Scorsese’s documentary of the Rolling Stones in concert, was  released worldwide in April 2008.  His most

THE WEIRD WORLD OF BLOWFLY

With subject and  musician Clarence Reid

The Weird World of Blowfly tells the story of Clarence Reid, a Miami
musician who wrote and produced romantic and spiritual songs for some of the
greatest Southern soul and R&B acts of the 1960s and ’70s.

He is also the gonzo performer Blowfly, Clarence’s freaky alter ego and the original X-rated rapper.  Now 69 years-old, with a gold-spangled superhero costume and a catalog of the world's raunchiest tunes, Blowfly tours the world, struggling for success and recognition after 50 years of making music.

The film highlights both Clarence’s and Blowfly’s unique contributions to music history, including Top-10 hits for artists like Betty Wright, Gwen McCrae, and KC & The Sunshine Band, and what might be the world’s first rap song, recorded in 1965.

Surprisingly, although Clarence has shocked and grooved audiences with Blowfly’s hilarious and provocative hard-core songs for more than four decades, he remains to this day a deeply religious man who forswears smoking, drugs and alcohol.

Shot over the course of two years, the film follows Clarence today and we see his life, career and philosophy unfold. A revealing portrait of an unheralded man, The Weird World of Blowfly examines Clarence's personal and professional contradictions, explores his legacy and celebrates his musical and cultural significance as a rapper and soul music legend.

REJOICE AND SHOUT:
Exhilarating New Movie Captures Gospel Music in All Its Glory!

Documentary Premieres Friday, June 3, 2011 at Film Forum

Film Forum is pleased to present the U.S. theatrical premiere of Don McGlynn's powerful, stirring new documentary, REJOICE AND SHOUT, for an open-ended engagement, beginning Friday, June 3.

Produced by Joe Lauro, and released by Magnolia Pictures, the movie is a beautiful, deeply felt overview of a musical genre that encompasses entertainment and spirituality -- and that is inherently political in its ability to move audiences both emotionally and intellectually when its subject is the African-American struggle for freedom and dignity.

The film includes rare archival footage of some of the earliest Gospel singers from the Deep South (The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi), as well as international legends like Smokey Robinson, Sam Cooke, the Staple Singers and Mahalia Jackson.

African-American Gospel music is a melting pot of history, culture, religion and politics. Archival clips of some of the genre's most brilliant artists, illuminating interviews with musicologists (including Anthony Heilbut and Bill Carpenter), and rarely seen, legendary concert footage make for a rousing, jubilant journey though Gospel's roots and an all-star compilation of some of its greatest hits.

Among the singers/musicians featured in the film are: The Soul Stirrers with Sam Cooke, The Dinwiddie Colored Quartet (from 1902), The Utica Quartet, The Golden Gate Quartet, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Dixie Hummingbirds, Mahalia Jackson, The Swan Silvertones (with Claude Jeter), The Clara Ward Singers, The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Staple Singers, Reverend James Cleveland, The Edwin Hawkins Singers, Andrae Crouch, The Selvey Family, Darrel Petties, and Smokey Robinson.

REJOICE AND SHOUT premieres Friday, June 3 at Film Forum, West Houston Street (W. of 6th Avenue), with screenings daily at 1:00, 3:15, 5:40, 7:50 and 10:00.

REJOICE AND SHOUT (2011, 115 mins.) Directed by Don McGlynn. Produced by Joe Lauro. Associate producer: Celia Mingus Zaentz. Executive Producers: Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner. A Magnolia Pictures Release.

Taqwacore

New York, NY - July 8, 2011
-
Lorber Films is proud to announce the DVD release of Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam (2009), a film by Omar Majeed, chronicling the nascent Muslim punk rock movement in America.

This energetic and powerful documentary comes to DVD, priced at $19.95. It is available with a street date of August 9, 2011.

Taqwacore was inspired by the work of Michael Knight, who converted to Islam in rebellion against his white-supremacist father. He went on to pen the novel The Taqwacores (a term combining the Muslim concept of God consciousness with hardcore punk), a manifesto for disillusioned Islamic teens.

Soon young Muslim musicians were contacting him and a tour idea was hatched. The film follows Knight and a variety of young subversives on tour as they shock and awe spectators in the U.S. before bringing their music to Lahore. They break every taboo along the way, from staging a lesbian thrash act at an Islamic convention to stomping on the American flag. As Knight exclaims, they're giving the finger to both sides.

Taqwacore
charts their brash, foolish and often exhilarating attempts to navigate the gap between their cultures and their countries, their religion and their individuality.

"MILES ELECTRIC" is THE Miles Davis performance film to see (& hear) in HD!

MILES ELECTRIC:
A DIFFERENT KIND OF BLUE

3-1/2 stars/4 stars for 'Miles'-philes (out of 4) [(2004)USA] - (1 hr 27 min.)

Dir. by Murray Lerner

Featuring music composed (& Trumpet performed) by Miles Davis  (@ the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival)

Review:

The now legendary 1970 Isle of Wight Festival contained a 38 min. 'jazz' number (titled "Call It Anything") by the late Miles Davis at a time when the world was changing and Davis was changing too - by going 'electric'. A previous documentary of this concert cut Miles' performance down to a mere 7 min, but director Murray Lerner has completely remastered the original tapes to produce one of the most startling concert films I have ever seen. All of the 16mm footage has been color-corrected and brought up to HI-DEF (high definition) standards along with Sony 5.1 Surround Sound.

Docu-director Lerner hasn't settled for re-issuing a simple concert segment but instead has built a masterpiece dedicated to how a genius like Miles Davis can create completely improvised music using electronic instrumentation. Luckily, all of the 'sidemen' for the Isle of Wight festival were available for interview (and alive), including living legends Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. In addition, longtime Miles fan Carlos Santana contributes his thoughts regarding the positive effects of jazz on rock 'n' roll while music critic Stanley Crouch offers his criticisms of electric over acoustic.

As you can see, Lerner isn't interested in making a tribute film as much as getting to the essence of how this music could be made and how over 3 decades later it can still have such a devastating effect on the listener. This was a moment in time when jazz and rock were integrated and the white and black audiences merged into what now is called jazz fusion. But all the music that followed has paled in comparison to what existed for that one moment in time that started at 5pm on Saturday, August 29, 1970 and finished 38 min. later.

BON JOVI: THE CIRCLE TOUR-LIVE FROM NEW JERSEY - EPIX On Demand

01/14/11 -On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies and shows on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home.

Today’s review: BON JOVI: THE CIRCLE TOUR-LIVE FROM NEW JERSEY (EPIX)._

BON JOVI: THE CIRCLE TOUR-LIVE FROM NEW JERSEY is a concert film. It begins when  the  band  enters from backstage and ends when they walk off the stage. There is no drama, no groupies, no footage of the bowls of only red
M&M’s. Just a concert.

And what more do you need?

Bon Jovi is a band of terrific musicians who really enjoy performing to an audience who loves them. The guys aren’t getting any younger, but they look great, especially Jon Bon Jovi, who’s impish grin hasn’t aged a bit! They play with the same energy as always, and their fan base includes some who look younger than most fans of aging rockers.

Being Jersey Boys, they even seem to have a little something extra for this concert in the Meadowlands. When it was over, I couldn’t believe it had been an hour and a half. It just flew by.

PRESENTS

STRANGE POWERS:
Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields

Directed by: Kerthy Fix and Gail O’Hara

Songwriter Stephin Merritt always seems to have a Chihuahua on his lap. Performing with the Magnetic Fields since 1991, he has composed some of his generation's most intellectually incisive, whimsical, witty and acerbic music (Merritt has been compared to Cole Porter for his sophisticated use of language).

A dedicated, growing army of admirers flocks to the group's concerts and makes Merritt an odd sort of anti-celebrity, one who is happiest not being recognized, whiling away the hours in gay bars on either coast (his favorite place for writing music) or spending a good part of the day soaking up obscure movie classics.

Ten years in the making, the film follows the famously grumpy Merritt and explores his relationship with Claudia Gonson, his creative collaborator and the band's manager. It paints a portrait of an artist whose music brilliantly holds up a mirror to the fears, joys, and insecurities of his time.

The fascinating documentary STRANGE POWERS: Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields will open theatrically in New York (The Film Forum on Wednesday, October 27) and in Los Angeles (The Laemmle Sunset 5 on Friday, November 5) with a national release to follow.

ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL
If you thought "This Is Spinal Tap" was just some comic "worst-case-rock- scenario," wait till you go on the road with a "real" bad manager and a quartet of aging rockers who are coming apart at the seams - HILARIOUS!

4

Review:

"I stayed dedicated to ... what?" -Robb

If Rob Reiner's "This is Spinal Tap" was a mockumentary about an imaginary heavy metal band, what does one call a "real" rockumentary with almost as many laughs and an astoundingly more bizarre evocation of rock stardom. Plus a member of the band named ... Robb Reiner (go figure).

How about a Self-mockumentary?

In any case, every great band gets their moment to shine in the spotlight, and they eventually get their own documentary profile (some more than one). In recent years, rock music audiences have been treated to Martin Scorsese's tribute to the Rolling Stones, Metallica's working process in the studio (with a shrink), and the Irish rockers U2 in concert (in "3D" no less).

But what about a band that only rock insiders know to exist as well as small pockets of loyal Canadian, European, and Japanese fans. A band originally called "Lips" that was forced to change its name after the unluckily timed release of the worldwide dance hit "Funkytown" by Lipps, Inc.

Though the band quickly changed their name to "Anvil!," the bad luck stuck with them. And though their concert style influenced nearly every hard rock act that followed, Anvil!'s road grosses and record sales floundered. They slowly disappeared from the scene while their imitators succeeded greatly.

Although no one in the film mentions this, a clip of Anvil! performing at Super Rock '84 in Japan shows a possible reason for the band's failure to break through. The problem (IMHO) was the fact that the band had a weird "gimmick." 'Lips', the lead singer-guitarist would play riffs on his instrument with a "dildo" (of all things).

Not exactly lurid when you compare it with Ozzy Osbourne biting the heads off of LIVE bats onstage, but maybe a bit too perverse for mass acceptance (especially when parents are buying the ticketsf or the kids).

In any case, the band formed by two 14-yr olds has endured for 31 years, though recent gigs hardly take them further than the bars in the Toronto suburbs. Then came the call ...

And the rest is history, as well as the major part of this partially hilarious, partially awe-inspiring portrait of a band that has no quit, even though, for the the majority of rock fans, Anvil! never achieved superband status.

If you enjoyed observng the intellectual approach of a mega-successful Metallica (as detailed in 2004's "Some Kind of Monster"), then you have to see Anvil's feral founders (Lips Kudrow & Robb Reiner) work their way through a botched European tour with only their guts and heart to carry them through.

Lips especially is like some child actor gone wrong who can never seem to see the forest for the trees. Most times he's the cheerleader of the band while at others he's its worst enemy. Will his temper flare-ups threaten to end the band's comeback once and for all? Will the stolid drummer Robb Reiner stick it out or walk?

Comedy, drama, and reality too, what more do you want?

Rockumentaries have been a hard sell over the years, but "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" could be Oscar-bound by the end of the year, so do yourself a favor and catch the first MUST-SEE movie of 2009.
And if you know anyone entertaining ideas of being a rock star, this story should set them straight in a hurry. Check it out!

‘Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love,' is an award-winning music-infused cinematic journey about the power of one man’s voice to inspire millions. Ndour is the highest selling African artist of all time and has collaborated with musical superstars like Bono, Neneh Cherry and Peter Gabriel.

At home in Senegal, the Grammy-award winning artist is an inspiration for generations. The film chronicles Ndour, a devout Sufi Muslim, as he releases a deeply personal and religious album called Egypt in the hope of promoting a more tolerant face of Islam. Almost instantly, his fellow Senegalese reject the album, and denounce his actions as blasphemous.

Director Chai Vasarhelyi follows Ndour for over two years – filming in Africa, Europe, and America – to tell the story of how he faces these challenges and eventually wins over audiences both at home and abroad.

R.E.M. film "This Is Not A Show: Live at the Olympia in Dublin"
coming to large and small towns across America

R.E.M., Warner Bros. Records, and Cinema Purgatorio present "This Is Not A Theatrical Release," a series of sneak preview screenings of the band's concert documentary This Is Not A Show: Live at the Olympia in Dublin. The 60-minute film, which includes concert and backstage footage shot at the Irish capital's Olympia club by noted French filmmakers Vincent Moon and Jeremiah, will screen in movie theaters, rock clubs, college campuses, and other venues across the country throughout October and early November.

Current shows are listed at http://cinemapurgatorio.com/movies/r-e-m-this-is-not-a-show with dates so far noted below. Cinema Purgatorio is actively soliciting suggestions for more places to screen.

This Is Not A Show ventures back to July 2007 when R.E.M. set up camp at the Olympia Theatre and tested new material over five nights before fired-up, capacity crowds comprised of fan-club members, friends, family, and fans from all over the world who were privy to R.E.M.'s so-called "experiment in terror," as guitarist Peter Buck puts it. "We were just trying to do something we hadn't done before," Buck says, "which meant there was no relaxing during the set. Every second we were playing something we didn't know all that well. Which was kind of good - there were all kinds of terror elements going on during that show."

This Is Not A Show premiered in late September 2009 at the Sound Unseen festival in Minneapolis. Below are additional screening dates confirmed so far:
Chicago, Illinois: Lincoln Hall, November 1
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: 941 Theater presents, Nov 1
Santa Fe, New Mexico: CCA November 4, 8pm
Dallas, Texas: Dallas Video Festival, November 5
Portland, Maine: SPACE Gallery, November 7, 7:30pm
Also, for your own personal use, the two CD + 1 DVD set is now out.

Many more cities coming soon. Don't see a date near you? Suggest a show.

For updates, stay on Cinema Purgatorio's email list..  And, of course, the best source for everything R.E.M. is RemHQ.com.  You can also check out some preview material at REMDublin.com.

PRESENTS

UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US

Open in NYC on December 4, 2009!!!

Until The Light Takes Us tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties when a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musicians, artists and music fans world-wide.

Until The Light Takes Us
goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of "Satanists running amok in Europe" to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles and beliefs that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture.

To capture this on film, directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell moved to Norway and lived with the musicians for several years, building relationships that allowed them to create a surprisingly intimate portrait of this violent, but ultimately misunderstood, movement.

The result is a poignant, moving story that’s as much about the idea that reality is composed of whatever the most people believe, regardless of what’s actually true, as it is about a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson across the northern sky.

FEATURING: Gylve “Fenriz” Nagell, Varg “Count Grishnackh” Vikernes, Jan Axel “Hellhammer” Blomberg, Kjetil “Frost” Haraldstad, Olve “Abbath” Eikemo, Harald “Demonaz” Nævdal, Bjarne Melgaard, & Harmony Korine

FEATURING MUSIC FROM: Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum, Ulver, Thorns, Gorgoroth, Enslaved, Boards of Canada, Black Dice, Sunn 0))), Múm, & Lesser

WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY:Aaron Aites & Audrey Ewell

Review:

"I found a book With no lines Loose words Stashed in a trapdoor I sought the hammer
I no longer had
Put together the words And started building" - NBC/SP & WILSON

This film is basically an aural collection of the many styles of Fados music with each song given a distinctive visual interpretation. Therefore, the best way to review it is not as a whole but as a series of short films with musical accompaniment.

And for those familiar with music-oriented movies (aka 'rockumentaries'), don't be put off by the fact that many of the singers perform with their eyes closed, as that is part of the Fado style.

LAST NOTE: This is not my kind of music, but if you like lots of strumming guitars, mandolins, etc., then add this one to your film (or album) list. (**Recommended segment)

1. Opening credits, brief history, and segue to marching song as the (theatricalized) Portuguese arrive in Lisbon (two song sequence lasts 7 min).

2. VARIACOES (3 min) - Acoustic duet (no vocals) - In memory of António Variações (1944-1984), an innovative singer-songwriter who died prematurely.

3. MOCAMBIQUE (5 min) - Mariza sings w/ male dancer (musical accompaniment by sextet). Song was written to honor the Portuguese settlement (aka 'Mozambique') established from 1507 to present.

**4. MODINHAS E LUNDUNS (5 min) - Toni Garrido sings w/ pianist & eight
female dancers. The song 'Midnight in London' has a racial context with the words "your little Negro" used repeatedly (may seem offensive, but used in context).

5. FADO MENOR DO PORTO (5 min) - Camané sings w/ small band and group of female dancers

6a. MARIA SEVERA, SEC. XIX (3 min) - Sung by Catarina Moura w/ a small band and a 'sanfona' player (very unique instrument). Dedicated to the memory of one of Fado's earliest known singers Maria Severa Onofriana (1820-1846), also known simply as A Severa. Segment also includes some B&W movie clips from the movie "A Severa," based on her short life.

6b. Homage to A Severa continues (3 min) with new singer Cuca, accompanied by guitarist.

7a. Homage to Alfredo Marceneiro (2 min) - Archive clip of Alfredo performing with two female dancers dancing in front of a rear-screen projection.

**7b. Homage continues (4 min) with three rappers (NBC/SP & WILSON) along with several dancers. [NOTE: Very heavy beat that could be disconcerting to older viewers]

8. LISBOA (4 min) - Solo by CARLOS DO CARMO with projected shots of the city around him. Accompanied by acoustic guitar.

9a. Homage to Carlos' late mother and Fado singer, Lucília do Carmo (2 min). Archive song by Lucilia is accompanied by group dance and rear-projection of the singer as a young woman.

**9b. Song segues (4 min) to new singer and (2 female-1 male) dancer love triangle. Singer is the very expressive LILA DOWNS.

**10. FADO MENOR (3 min) - Sung by veteran Fadista Argentina Santos, a very deeply felt vocal performance.

11. FADO BATIDO (3 min) - Instrumental song with dancers leaping around a bonfire.

**12. MORNA (4 min) - Sung by the beautiful LURA w/ sextet and dancers.

13. FADO ALFACINHA (3 min) - Camané's second appearance as soloist. This song was made famous by the Queen of Fado, Amália Rodrigues(1920-1999).

14a. Homage to Amália Rodrigues (3 min) - Archive song w/ dancers in front of rear-screen projection.

**14b. Segue to new song (5 min)by singer-guitarist CAETANO VELOSO.

15. REVOLUCAO (3 min) - Male chorus and archive footage of protest rallies.

The film concludes with a tribute to FADO FLAMENCO and and CASA DE FADOS. The latter demonstrates the 'dueling' aspect of Fado music as it emerged from the cafes. Various singers take a song stanza in turn and try to best the previous performer.

All in all, this is a very informative depiction of a style of music that is unknown to many Portuguese people (especially myself). Certainly a film that will live forever in music libraries and should be sought out by musical completists.

Your mileage may vary (I yawned twice), but it's certainly watchable (& listenable) for all musically inclined audiences.
