Performance Ensemble: Robert Berger, Patrick Daniels, Noel Dinneen, Irving Gregory, Debbie Troche, Nora Woolley, and Sam Zuckerman
Review:
Just when you thought it was safe to book a flight out of town, here comes "Charlie Victor Romeo (CVR) -3D," the movie made from the transcipts of "actual" black box flight recordings (CVR = cockpit voice recorder).
So if you overcame your fear of aviation after seeing the recent Robert Zemeckis film "Flight" (2012) while further rationalizing that Hollywood airplane accident story was star Denzel Washington's "fault," then CVR will make it REAL and put you back on a train, in a rental car, or floating the long, slow way on a boat - cause flying is totally OUT now as a means of transportation.
Although a low-budget indie that takes place entirely in 6 separate cockpits, what CVR lacks in pricey special effects it more than makes up for in real-life details that increase the thriller aspect and force the viewer to understand what a nightmare the flight crew can be facing while the passengers sit blithely unaware sipping their cocktails just a few feet away in first class.
Six sequences are presented in "Charlie Victor Romeo." each one is preceded by technical blueprints of the plane-type involved, plus a few important numbers you should remember, among them the total Passengers & Crew. That number will change by the end of each scene. Those final numbers hit hard, especially when you realize the people in the cockpit that fought so hard to keep the plane aloft are possibly among the dead.
It would not be fair to say more about what actually happens in CVR, suffice to say you will be stunned by how easily a plane can be overwhelmed by things like: ground crew errors, icing, birds, instrument failure, and long-term wear & tear on the airplanes themselves.
As for the target audience for this film, if you like a "real" thriller or If you're the type of person whose friends tease for your fear-of-flying, well CVR should give you all the ammunition you need to silence your critics. I would also recommend this movie for anyone that flies often, just to wake you up to the many ways you can help the crew by watching what's happening outside the plane.
Think about it, hundreds of peoples lives held in hands of the half dozen (or less) folks in the Cockpit and Control tower. They need all the help they can get, so ....
Happy Flying!
