AN EDUCATION
Watch The Trailer
Synopsis: In the post-war, pre-Beatles London suburbs, a bright schoolgirl is torn between studying for a place at Oxford and the more exciting alternative offered to her by a charismatic older man.
Starring Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina, Rosamund Pike, Dominic Cooper, Olivia Williams, Emma Thompson, Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent and Carey Mulligan.
Review A, OR How a Movie can review itself in 5 quotes or less:
"I'm going to talk to two people that know lots about this." -Jenny
"I won't allow it!" -Jack (Jenny's father)
"This is who we are." -David (Jenny's new older "friend")
"Best night of my life." -Jenny
Review B, my opinion, but not as long as a NY Times critique:
"You seem to be old and wise."
Still in limited stateside release, AN EDUCATION is a finely crafted Brit-pic featuring gorgeous period details of London in the 60's, appropriate music, and a pitch-perfect cast.
As the 16-yr old virgin "Jenny" in this delicate coming-of-age story, rising actress Carey Mulligan is not only fantastic in this role but also a deadringer for a young, British Katie Holmes (hopefully she'll stick with acting & avoid getting swallowed up by a Tom Cruise-style beau).
Mulligan perfectly captures the teen angst derived from overbearing parents, strict school marms, and the devilish temptations of life in the adult world with 'David' (Peter Sarsgaard).
And if you're wondering how a Yank (aka American) like Sarsgaard ("Garden State") made it into this British milieu, my only guess is that he's the last American actor who still has teeth bad enough to be right for a British period piece.
Catty comments aside, his modulated performance makes Sarsgaard all the more watchable as he horns in on the innocent young Jenny and gives her what the title of the film simply indicates.
Most welcome in this movie is the comic relief provided by veteran actor Alfred Molina (28 yrs. since his debut in "Raiders of the Lost Ark") as Jenny's "strict" father and Rosamund Pike ("Pride & Prejudice" -2005) as 'Helen', the daft blonde to end all daft blondes.
Laughs, romance, perfect period photography, costuming, and music, what more can be said about this MUST-SEE fall movie ...
Oscar nominators take note, this one should be on your Top Ten list. Kudo's all around!!!
"They don't want people that can think for themselves."
[Director's note: Lone Scherfig is a 50 yr-old, female director from Denmark who has graduated from Dogme95 low-budget filmmaking to more modestly budgeted UK cinema like this film (she also wrote "Red Road")]
